do what lilspaz68 suggested and keep him on those meds
or switch him to the meds that were previously suggested many times but which you can not get from your vet

in any case he needs to stay on a combo of antibiotics, likely for at least another 6 weeks

It doesn’t really help that you just suggested three contradicting statements

Lilspaz68 said to continue the antibiotics he has been on
I said to do that or switch to the antibiotics that were suggested multiple times but which you can not get from your vet
both of these suggestions mean giving a combo of antibiotics (ie baytril plus at least one other antibiotic)
and I said that whichever you do, in my opinion he needs to be on the combo of antibiotics for weeks

If you are ever able to take him to see a good vet with the knowledge and experience to treat rats, then the vet will hopefully consider various possible causes for his symptoms and provide appropriate treatment.

Edit: I hope he is soon feeling much better

I am not really able to get azithromycin as the vet that I currently go to is the only one who can give it to me. There are no other vets around me that I can go to to get proper services sadly. The vet seems to just want to make things harder for me and not listen to what i have to say and my suggestions, take forever to actually do anything, and doesn't give me proper treatments for my boy. I am told one thing by the vet and another thing by the members on the forum. I doubt she would actually give me a combo if she wouldnt even give me the azithromycin. It is sad that she doesn't know how to give animals proper treatment. They say they like rats but they barely do anything to help them. Thank you for your suggestions though.

Doxy alone often doesn't help unless its a very mild resp infection, if you only want to dose one antibiotic you should use Baytril (enrofloxacin) as its much more effective alone. Doxy is a great antibiotic to ADD to an existing one to make a good combo.

I have a question. Are you, and ccrusted the same person? Y'all both seem to boost your threads, and continue on asking the same questions multiple times, after being given the advice that you don't take. Not trying to be rude, but if you don't take the advice that has been given to you by multiple knowledgeable people on here, then why keep asking for opinions? In the meantime, your poor little rattie is sick, and could be treated, either by using our suggestions, or taking him back to his vet, and doing what she tells you. It seems that you and ccrusted have the same vet, or at least the same experience. Hope you get the meds your boy needs, and he gets better soon. That's the most important thing.

I doubt that the vet would give me multiple medications as a combo, she wouldn't listen to me if I suggested it. The doxycycline worked great until the treatment was stopped due to running out of medication (the vet clinic workers suggested that it would work even when off it so dont attack me for this) along with the baytril. If you are telling me that baytril is stronger/more effective alone, i could try to convince the vet to prescribe him more, it is also a cheaper option which is also a plus.

    Thank you.

I boost my threads so often because I am always asking questions and if I didn't boost them, they would get all lost in the other threads and my questions would never be answered. There are always new ways to answer questions and new solutions to problems and I want to know all I can so I ask a ton of questions to get a better understanding of the situation. You can complain all you want about how irritating it is that i boost my threads and ask a ton of questions but just keep it to yourself instead of spreading hate on the internet. I am trying to find the best alternative for my boy that is effective and efficient instead of just using the first suggestion that I am given, i need to make sure it actaully is a good choice. I have been told so much information that was incorrect on this forum by people who i want to trust but it is honestly hard to trust people on the internet when you don't know what their intensions are. Yeah, you assume and hope that they are replying to help you, but they could have misinformation or they could be trying to harm you and your rats by coaxing you into beliving their lies Just saying. There are a ton of sucky vets out their but their are also really good ones, seems that I wasn't lucky in that situation but sadly I can't do anything about it.

I appreciate that you are looking out for my boys but you really can't be making people feel horrible about themselves over the internet because they don't have access to the same resources that you do.

Thank you for your help anyway.

O totally get trying to learn all you can! I would hope anyone on here would do the same. It's only beneficial to your rats to learn for them. I wasn't spreading hate. Take it how you will. Was just asking questions, and stating some things. Was just curious if you are the same person as ccrusted. Don't assume I have better access to information. I use the same avenues you are. I had to learn the hard way to take the advice I was given, and to use it quickly. Rats go downhill so fast, and die super fast. So it's important to do what you can, as soon as you can. But also, store the info that worked, because you may need to use it again. As far as anyone on here giving info to harm you or your rats, that's just sick! I'd hope no one on here would do something like that. I'm pretty sure most all the people who gave you advice, did it to HELP your babies. I could care less what people think of me, but if their info helps my rats, then I'm happy.

I apologize for lashing out at you, I just get really defensive when it comes to my animals because they mean absolutely everything to me.

I do not have the greatest memory at all and I just had the sudden realization when I heard my boy breathing roughly that this was something that I said about the baytril that my boy had been taking earlier on in this thread.

“...the medication did start to work when I first got it but then it stopped working a few days later and I was told to just give him the full dose of baytril for the 6 weeks and to see what happens then and if they need to prescribe him a new medication. Well, the baytril still doesn’t workand now I am out of it so what is the plan now?”

If I didn’t have horrible memory, I would have been able to cross out the idea of getting more baytril because it doesn’t work anymore and it was a waste of energy and money to try to get it from the vet when it doesn’t even work. I’m honestly mad at myself for not remembering this sooner. I don’t know what to do anymore.

baytril often needs to be given in combination with another antibiotic …… and there are other more effective antibiotics for secondary infections - which kill fast.
Also if breathing issues are caused by a heart problem then heart meds are needed.
Breathing issues can also be caused by other things such as scaring in the lungs from inadequate medical care etc, a tumour in the chest or in the lungs, etc

I was told by lilspaz68 earlier in the thread that I “ should use Baytril (enrofloxacin) as its much more effective alone.” I am just taking the information that I was given because I really don’t know what else to do. I want to believe the advice that I am given since it is coming from experienced rat owners (or so I assume).

I think Lilspaz meant that if you NEED to use one alone, it would be baytril, since it is the best one to be used alone, if your vet won’t give you another to go with it. In other words, doxy alone isn't going to cut it. Neither will azithromycin. Doxy and azithromycin work better when given with baytril, or on minor infections.

But you probably do need to add to the baytril, for it to fully work at this point. Or else try Lasix and see if that helps, then continue with the antibiotics.

Yes, baytril is the most effective single antibiotic for most things, so for most problems baytil is the best antibiotic to give if you are only going to give one antibiotic.
But as mentioned above, baytril is more effective if given with other antibiotics.
