Introductions. How do you not give up? and cage ideas?

Hi everyone I have two girls i need to introduce. I am getting my rat put to sleep hopefully tomorrow and there will be a lone rat left over. I brought a girl (known atm as Black Rat) home from work who was left after her friends died or were pts due to ill health (glad i did because my...

    Odd looking lump

Hi everyone, I thought I would give an update. We went back to the vet four weeks later to discuss surgery and any possible treatments. The lump had doubled in size by then and it was determined that it was unoperable because there is no telling what it is connected to. Pony has also fought many...

    Odd looking lump

I think i am safe for now until this tumour solidifies, if it does. My contract at work ends mid August so i don't know if i will have a job soon to be able to pay for anything - hence why i can't consider anything at this moment in time

    Odd looking lump

Thanks for the replies. The vet said it felt squishy but also rather gritty. he thinks that it is the beginning of a mammary tumour but we need to keep an eye on it. I will be devastated if it is, in a rat so young :( She is on meds for a URI - again!! third time in 10 months *sigh*. I'm not...

    Odd looking lump

I don't think she is in pain. I was able to touch it without her reacting in any odd ways. She thinks humans are gross so she hasn't ever been the cuddliest of rats, so i dont think her behaviour is any different. I will let you know what the vet says tomorrow :) thanks for the help

    Odd looking lump

A hernia.. I never considered that. I have a feeling my vet will want to do surgery if it is. Do you know how urgent that would need to be done? I'd rather wait until next Thursday if i can for pay day but if it needs to be done urgently then i can dig in to savings. i felt it all and couldn't...

    Odd looking lump

Hi everyone, I haven't posted in a long time but thought i would share this ...'experience'. One of my girls (Pony) has a lump that has very quickly developed (like, it wasn't there a few days ago). She is around a year old. The lump is squishy and pretty much disappears depending on how i...

I don't know what to DO. OMG. Vet overseas! Eddie seizure...

you did the best thing for him. he would have been so mentally and physically damaged and exhausted that you helped him out in a massive way. watching ANYTHING have a seizure is scary business. I have no explanations or suggestions for why he suddenly started having seizures. There must have...

    Ideas needed re smell

I ditched fleece liners in my cage and i just use a layer of cat litter (the safe variety of course) in the pans. Some goes on the floor, but not a lot and its easy to sweep up like Dahlas said above. The shelves are just bare plastic and i wipe them down with a damp cloth. Bedding (paper nests...

My day at work with the owls - pic heavy

hey, i lost this post a while ago haha. totally forgot about it. yeah, my time at the owl centre was over when he told me not to return after i helped at the opening of my university's animal unit (it was being named after a guy who built it and died of cancer a year before). The last i know...

Rescue babies! 4 babies went to a new home

she would have weaned them early because of the second pregnancy, but they still need to be taught and nurtured by their mum and its best to keep them together as long as possible

Hope we;ll soon have a new Rat Shack member

ooo i too can't stay quiet when im in a pet shop, even if there is a pet shop worker there, because they generally give bad advice (like telling this lady she couldn't get another rabbit if her rabbit would bite it even though she mentioned neutering it). what kind of vet talks like that...

Rescue babies! 4 babies went to a new home

there are studies out there that show that seperation from mom too early, and if they aren't weaned properly, can cause stress and behavioural problems in the babies

Muirenn is bleeding from her lady parts

Mu has been on Baytril for three days now and she is looking and acting a lot better :) we didn't notice any blood or discharge yesterday but Clodagh seems to sense there is something wrong and keeps cleaning up the area. I had them out for play time yesterday and Muirenn is back to her crazy...
