    Opinions on re-using names

Just wanted to pop in and give a quick update. We got our standard poodle pup, and did name her Skye. It fits very well, and in the end both Tom and I love the name. :) I do feel that it is a tribute to my special rat girl as well.

    Opinions on re-using names

Thanks! We have written down literally hundreds of other names, and none of them are right. Just wanted some thoughts to make sure it wasn't completely taboo.

    Opinions on re-using names

Hi everyone I haven't been around here in ages. I have gotten out of rat keeping, I have just one girl left who is 35 months old. It is ironically funny that over the past 7 years of having rats and spending hundreds on medical care I never had one live past 2 and a half, and now when I am...

    question about CN

Can someone tell me how the new lipped shelves are attached in the CN?? I had the old style FN so can't quite figure out in my head how these new ones could be securely attached.

    Poppy's spay - She's in recovery!

Yes, she couldn't get it off. Tevy didn't mind it at all. Maple is right though, they cannot properly eat with it on. So I had to leave out tons of baby food and wet cat food which they can eat with the e-collar on. And then under strict supervision remove (and clean!!) the e-collar. But...

How bad is using towels for bedding?

I have been using beach type towels for quite some time now, whenever I can get them (the dollar store only carries them on and off).... much less stinky/gross than the fleece. The fleece I find I have to throw out (a single pee gets crusty yucky), whereas the towels I will actually wash. I...

    Poppy's spay - She's in recovery!

I have had some rats I've had to put e-collars on. One who continually ripped her lump removal site open over and over. And another who opened up her entire spay incision to her body cavity. (That was fun!! Not!) E-collars are NOT fun with rodents, but every once in awhile they are...

    The Cost of Euthinasia

It is only $30 here, but if you would like gas then it is an additional $60 or so. $150 is crazy. That is a price for a cat here, including communal cremation (and most of the expense is the cremation!).

    Cat food question

Try them both. My cat eats EVO well, but she won't touch the Before Grain. It has a different consistency. Your cat might like one food you are considering but not the other. Personally I would recommend both the Evo dry, and EVO 95% meat canned if you can get it. :) I think any grain free...

    Feline diabetes?

Food, food, food is SO important. What are you feeding? Feeding the correct food will reduce the amount of insulin needed, and in some cases eliminate the need for insulin altogether. Standard diets have too many carbohydrates which is what causes the huge spike in blood sugar which a...

    Pet Insurance

There is no one in Canada that has a plan that will cover exotics. Dogs & cats only. However, as for pet insurance being totally bunk. I don't agree with that. I have one client that has now had $9,000 in orthopedic surgeries for her dog covered 80% by pet insurance!! Her co-pay has now...

    1% Milk

In small amounts I'm sure it would be absolutely fine. I often give pieces of cheese as a treat.... :) Stereotypical, I know, but the rats go nuts for it. And many people give yoghurt as treats (I don't buy it because the stuff always goes bad before I eat it!).

    my puppy

Gorgeous!! You have a beautiful puppy. Australian Shepherds are so smart and if you are used to JRT's... much more trainable. ;) As for Flyball if that is what you are interested in, maybe try calling around to different clubs. I know here clubs start them at 6-9 months just with no jumps...

    FURminator for dogs

I LOVE!! the Furminator. There are knock offs available as well but I have heard they have problems with premature breakage. You would be amazed at the number of people who don't even realize how much dead undercoat their pet has until I pull out the Furminator (of course on some of them I can...

    Coccidia and giardia fecal question

If you feed a grain free meat canned cat food (EVO, Go Natural, Before Grain, etc.) your cat should still have urine with an acidic pH which will stop crystals from developing. As well I'm sure your vet told you canned cat food is always better as it helps to continuously flush out the bladder...

Patrick neuter abscess - vet update :( (pg.5)

Looks like it is healing beautifully!! I can't even really see the incisions, so if they are indeed in that picture -- wow they are beautiful. The lump is probably a bit of a suture reaction (rats seem to be SO! prone for some reason) -- sometimes these turn into abscesses but often it is just...

    Myco Question

I'm assuming slightly true. (Presuming the vet is correct that wild cats do not have mycoplasma, which I do not know.) It would be the same as bringing in myco free lab rats (these are not all lab rats, just certain strains) into contact with regular pet rats. Some will do okay and carry it...

    sunflower seeds

They are chock full of calories. It is a "healthy" type of fat, but there is just SO much fat in them. Way more than a rat is able to burn.

    Need Advice about brands

A dog loves its dog kibble just as much when it is 10 years old as when it is 2. I have a very sick rat who is 2 years and 4 months and she is STILL trying to eat her lab blocks rather than all of the other delicious stuff I have in there to try to build her energy. Crazy girl! My rats love...
