sunflower seeds

Good? Bad? I had never heard anything bad about them before until I ran across a short comment on here, so I thought I'd ask everyone.

They should be used only as a very very rare treat.

They have a lot of fat but it's ok as an occasional treat. Make sure you give them the unsalted ones too.

They are chock full of calories. It is a "healthy" type of fat, but there is just SO much fat in them. Way more than a rat is able to burn.

One time i fed my rats about six sunflower seeds in one day... Next day their fur was looking really greasy.

if your looking for a small seed treat like that I would use pumpkin seeds instead. there fat content isn't as high as sunflower seeds. ( don't remeber numbers right now sorry ) They are sold husked, roasted, and unsalted. My girls love them and I use them and flax seed in there home made cookies alot. Best way to get them is when the halloween rush is over get the discounted pumpkins and roast up all the seeds yourself. all tho they wont be husked when roasting yourself I found my girls loves doing that job themself. I picked up 10 pumpkins and roasted up all the seeds last year and all it costed me was 2 dollars :joy:
