Glad to hear Jack is in your capable hands and is being taken care of. I wonder if some of the swelling can be attributed to scarring? If so, then his feet would never return to 'normal', but I think as long as the sores heal, that would be as good as it's going to get. If he's been ignored for the last few months, he's probably feeling like he's in heaven!
Have you intro'd him to anyone yet?

We're in the works of getting him a friend. Abby is picking up the lone boy in Oramocto and I'll be meeting up with her sometime next week to bring him down and intro them. Then they'll probably be going to one of our Halifax foster homes to be friends with Percy if we can't get the lone boy up there in Halifax.

Jack is doing sooo great! He runs to the cage door to see us when we call his name! He's such a love bug! I brought him downstairs last night to get some cuddles when we were playing board games with the guys. He just cuddled in my arms and took it right in.

I'll get some pics of his feet they're starting to look a lot better and his fur is starting to get better too I think. I need to weight him again and see if he's lost any weight. He's on strict lab blocks and veggies no treats so we can get his weight down.

He was running up the sock covered ramp the other day Ang said so that's big time improvement! I think when he has a friend he'll be a new rat for sure.

I am so glad he is doing well. This big guy deserves some great times after all the roughten times he has had. I hope the new friend idea works. :joy:

Poor Jack! I'm so glad you saved him! You guys have become this little man's angels. I hope he feels better, he looks very sweet. The diet his 'owners' had looks like junk food...Even to humans that might be considered junk food as mixed nuts can only cover a small area of nutritional needs.
Btw, That's awesome rat porn! (But in all seriousness, I HATE physicals and thumbs up to jack for taking it like a gentleman)

lol daisylynn

Jack is doing really great and is losing weight! He was 1.5 lbs. On the converter it puts that at 680g? I thought it was more than that? Anyways he's down to 630g!

His fur is looking better each day, it's still pretty wiry feeling but not as bad as it was. He hasn't had any penis plugs for a few days so that's good news too!

Here's some pics of the cute guy

He loves taking in the rubbin's

And this is how his feet look now. They're getting smaller but there was some green kinda pus stuff on them today.

I'm picking up his friend Francis from Abby today. I think he's up for intros. We'll see how it goes!

Jack's feet seem to be getting better a little each day and the more they get better the more he wants to move around! He's a funny guy he'll take ever single block from the bowl downstairs and bring it up to his hut upstairs. I put them back each day so he has to do it again. At least this way he's getting some excersie as well.

Him and Francis are living in the same cage and are still in the ignore phase. Francis wasn'ts to be Jack's friend so bad and Jack just ignores him and if he gets to close will squeek lol he's a big baby.

I think when they're introduced to Percy he and Francis will be very close and Jack will probably be the loner but will eventually warm up to them. Francis is on the same level health and temperment wise as Percy so I hope intros go well with them. We wanted to have the trio with Percy again just in case Jack passes because of his age so at least he'll have Francis.

Oh Jack!! Be still my heart!

He looks so much better overall. :) You'll find once the bumblefoot is under control it looks sore but they don't seem to have a lot of pain with it :) And his activity levels will just continue to improve. Will he allow a kiss on that big rusting forehead? If so, can you give him one for me?

Wonderful job with this boy

This is the 'food he was on'
DSCF0004.jpg
Oh come on people! that's not bad food at all! There's corn, wheat, oats, pasta, raisins, cranberrys pumpkin seeds, pineapple, looks like peanuts (ok, not too much protein), maybe ground flax too for all we know? What the heck is wrong with that? I see a lot of good stuff there and a lot of bad stuff missing. Looks like a good start to a complete healthy diet. do any of you know what he got for supper to supplement it? I think there's a lot of criticism that is is more cliquey than fair about this food. Not fair to his former parent to make her look bad or neglecful just cause she doesn't use lab blocks.

Jack is a heartsnatcher and there's no doubt he's in a great place. Welcome Home Jack, and Congrats Linds & Ang!

I sure hope you can get his feet healed. That bumblefoot is not always from the condition of the cage, I'm sure dirty wire will contribute to it but it happens to the odd kid even in a clean foot-comfy environment. I think it's more to do with the kid's own immune system than their environment. We've all had kids from hellaciously dirty circumstances, even on wire floors that didn't come with it,, and I've had a couple who developed it here even on smooth surfaces with newspaper. Most notably Fidget who had it horribly and I tried EVERYTHING, When she died it finally was pretty much healed, but I attribute that more to that she hadn't been moving around much (even tho she'd been sitting in her own pee more often than ever before her feet were almost healed) She was on antibiotics, but she had been for a long time for one thing after another, that's why I think this is more related to the immune system than the environment.. .. none of the medications or applications or cleaning or massage made that difference before she was near her end. Of course bad environment can make things worse and good care make improvements, but the bumblefoot is due to the kid's makeup more than their environment.

No matter what caused it, ANYONE who would neglect a rat with issues this bad by not taking them to a vet is a bad owner... period. It was clearly very easy to do, and the medications he is on are inexpensive, easy to apply, and are working! The previous owner clearly didn't care that this rat was suffering with every step he took, enough that he would likely not move as much, thus he got very overweight. I am sure his diet didn't help, as he probably ate only the dried fruit (pasta, peanuts, etc) cause it was his fave and ignored the rest.

I have no sympathies for the previous owner.

The previous owner did her best on what she thought was good care she took him in from her friend who no longer wanted him because of the health issues he had. So she took him in but she just didn' thave the right tools or info or the funds to take him to the vet with having a new baby.

The food he was on was all that he ate he didn't get any other suppliments of any kind he was fed that and cherrios and some kind of cheeses and other crap that I didn't get a picture up of. So really he was fed just junk food.

lol I had someone comment on photobucket on one of his penis pictures that I need help. I love how people comment on things that they know nothing about. Gotta love those Trolls.

Jack's feet last night had some really nasty green puss coming out of his foot. I got most of it out. His feet are getting better but they sure look nasty still. They seem to go through different phases of looking really great and then start to get scabby and gross again. Must be the different layers of skin healing?
This cream though Dr. Gallon gave us is freaking amazing though for what it's doing for his feet. He's a happier boy for sure.

i"m sure glad something seems to be helping his feet. That's what's important amidst all the other crap. We can dispute til doomsday about diet or environment, but all that matters is what works for the kid, and if it will work for other kids too. I hunted the internet, tried everything that was recommended by more than 1 person with Fidget. Any small improvement was hope.. but nothing made a big difference. I think it's an immune system that is not able to ward off a bacteria that more healthy kids can.
Scares hell out of me to see a penis plug, a boy has to be in real bad shape to not look after that part of him, but I've seen them come back from even that. Jack has every support system to do it. And a lot of hopes & prayers from far-off places too.

Poor Jack is still not catching a break. He either sprained his left leg or he's not putting any weight on it because of the bumble. It's really swollen all the way up to the leg so we've been giving him some metacam which he hates. I don't blame him that stuff has the worst smell ever.
He seems a little more down because of this new issue and his bumblefoot on that left foot is all scab again. Seems to go through different phases. Hopefully he'll start to use his foot again poor guy.

I would be worried about a possible infection causing the pain and swelling. Perhaps a visit to the vet just to check things out? Poor fella!

He's on baytril for the infection. There's an infection for sure because there was some green puss coming out of his foot. Right not it's just scabs. I've been too dizzy to drive to go anywhere once I'm feelin better I'll have to get a re-check on him

Damn! Poor little man. Rude to ask about his penis, but how's he doing with that?
I'd sure be soaking his foot in epsom salts often as I could during the day if he had green pus coming out. I'd worry that he had a deep absess. I'd have him on antibiotics too of course.
I'm not giving up on Jack I'm praying for him. He wouldn't have lived long if he hadn't come to you.. He's in bad shape, I sure hope he's a miracle, we can't count on them but they really do happen! I know he's high-risk, he's sure had the best chances with you.
