Cost of a vet visit / meds?

It's about $40-60 for a visit in my area, depending on the vet (the more expensive not necessarily being better either!). Additional procedures or medications will add more to the cost of course. I think on average I've spent about $130 per rat on vet visits, after all was said and done.

    Average size of females

Females reaching maturity should be around 250 grams, give or take. They may be smaller or larger, depending on their bloodline (do they come from larger animals or smaller animals?), how they were raised, their over all health, etc. I don't have records in front of me, but I think most of my...

Escaped snake kills two NB children

Very well possible it is not the same person, but I do still find it interesting. I don't know enough about Canadian geography to know how far apart those cities are, or how likely it is it could be the same person, but I do know around here people are highly mobile, and it is not at all...

Escaped snake kills two NB children

Horribly tragic two young boys died. Completely agree. I don't buy this story. Snakes typically don't go around killing people for no reason. Snakes typically only kill what they intend to eat, and will not attack prey too large to consume. I don't understand how this snake would kill one...

    This Vegan Thing......?

Amaranth and quinoa. Tasty, easy to cook, easy to incorporate into recipes, packed full of all kinds of good nutrients (including protein).

    Protein

My notes from the studies I've read so far: - Protein is required for optimal growth, and amount needed depends on the protein's value. Value of protein for maintenance is not the same as the value of protein for growth. Less protein is needed with age. * Protein recommendation for optimum...

    This Vegan Thing......?

Good fiber, good vitamins and minerals. ;) We have a food dehydrator. I hate buying dehydrated fruits and veggies because of the stuff they put into it Really like being able to make my own, control how much sugar (if any) is added, and know what else is going into it.

    This Vegan Thing......?

I haven't heard about the seed issue specifically, but I have heard about companies trying to put patents on living organisms (i.e. something they discovered a gene for... not necessarily GMO's, but bacteria even!). I'm against it. Not ok! It's disgusting. These companies are trying to control...

    This Vegan Thing......?

I am very opinionated about diet... but I won't go into all of that. Just a few basics: I think in general people eat far too much meat and dairy, far too much processed food, and far too much of the wrong grains. I also think our food sources, both plant and animal, are done all the wrong way...

Need some advice about pregnant rats!

Exactly what kind of genetic testing did you have done? And where did these rats originally come from? How old are they? What is their housing like? What are you feeding them? Why did you breed them? I bred pet rats for 10 years. I can honestly say, your original post is something that should...

males and females in the same house

I would say if you are going to keep males and females in the same house and want to take as few chances as possible... Make sure your cages are well secured - check every millimeter of the cage, check latches, locks, etc and make sure there is NO way for the rats to get out. Keep the rats in...

males and females in the same house

I have kept pet rats for over 20 years, and bred pet rats for 10 years. In all of that time, I honestly never once had an accidental litter. 10 years of keeping males and females in the same house, not one single accidental litter. I will be honest and say I have had rats slip out of cages, and...

    Surgery on our elderly babies

My understanding is the scarring makes it harder for their lungs to properly utilize oxygen. That is vitally important during surgery, because that's what helps keep them alive, but also because they need to be able to absorb every bit of oxygen they can when gaseous anesthesia is used. In...

    Surgery on our elderly babies

Years ago I did have a tumor removed from an older girl. I'd have to look up the records to see exactly what her age was, but she was approaching 2 years. She was in good health and good condition, and made through the surgery just fine. That night after the surgery she was trying to run around...

    Legitimate Rat Breeders?

I've been out of the loop for so long now, I could not make any recommendations. Saying that, I do believe there ARE ethical, responsible breeders out there who ARE breeding for the betterment of our rats. The thing is, they are probably very few and very far between, and very possibly may be...

About the rat shack forum. Please read

I've always been a lurker on this forum for one very specific reason, the fact it is a rescue based forum and I bred rats for 10 years. I still lurk, I just don't always feel welcome enough to participate. But having said that... I MUCH prefer forums like this over Facebook.

    Chat Meetup?

I'll think on it and let you know if anything comes to mind. For me personally... my lack of activity has nothing to do with the forum itself, but the fact that as a breeder I didn't always feel particularly welcomed to the forum. Some members yes, but there was always an overwhelming attitude...

males and females in the same house

In my experience, it really doesn't have any affect on the boys. For many years I kept males and females in the same house, and had no problems with the boys being more aggressive or going nuts whenever the girls went into heat. I would say it most likely depends on the rat. Some boys MIGHT be...

    Chat Meetup?

I'm in chat right now. I'll "hang out" for a bit if anyone wants to join me. Not very active on the forum any more, but I do pop in now and again to lurk.
