I just home from work ..and went to take Ryder out ...there is a lump about the size of a pea under his chin, in the same spot as last time ..it's hard and movable ...

I am speechless, heartbroken and devastated :sad3:

If it's hard it may be an abscess. See if you can get it aspirated before you worry too much. If it is an abscess, I urge you to talk to your vet about using a different antibiotic than Baytril. You don't want to give it frequently and have him develop a resistance to it if he ever has a respiratory infection. That, and I haven't had great success with Baytril and abscesses.

I really think it's not an abscess ..can abscess be pea shaped? just like a tumor would be and pop up that fast ..there was nothing there last night ..my vet is not in till monday ..is there anything I can do?

I'm not sure what other meds my vet has for abscesses to be honest ...

The lump is movable, dose not seem to be attached, the skin moves with it and its hard

Sophie had a pea shaped lump we were sure was a tumour and had it removed... it was an abscess. She'd been on Doxy and Baytril for over two months at the time of surgery and it was still growing slowly and because of her history we assumed it was an abscess. A tumour did develop in the area later though and she was no longer a candidate for surgery. Does Dr. D still have the tumour from before so that it can be sent for testing?

I'm not certain, its something I'll have to ask him when I go down Monday ..Ryder was still under the rescues name at that point, so im not sure what they did with it.

The only med I have here now is Baytril, Pred and Doxy ..would it help to start him on Baytril just in case ..or do warm compresses?

Victoria, the implant works only on mammary tumors right? Asking because when I saw this thread, this is the first thing that came to my mind - if it's a tumor, get it off and get an implant. But I definitely am not an implant specialist!

Renee... I'm so sorry for poor Ryder! I so hope this is an abcess and it will be gone in no time! You both deserve a bit of a break! :hugs: I just can't help thinking it's strange that thing starts growing right after he moved back in with Badger...

My vet was unable to get the implants in, he tried so hard to get them for Hannah and Momma ..he is still working on getting them, but he is not having luck!

I noticed a scab in the are of the tumor a few days ago, so it might be an abscess ...on the pea sized lump there is a spot of fur missing ..i can't see if there is a scab since he won't sit still.

The implant (theoretically) reduces the chances/growth rate of certain mammary/hormone related tumours. (It's done so with the benign tumours in my crew but not the less common malignant ones.) I don't know that this is even a mammary tumour (I also don't think it was a salivary gland tumour, that's what we think Amy had and it was in a very different location) and at this point, if it's regrown, it wouldn't be enough on it's own. (Tumours in young rats are especially worrisome and if they're regrowing this quickly even more so.)

The tumour (along with other medical waste) has to be disposed in a specific manner, so sometimes they still have the tissue in a fridge somewhere and it's worth asking. (It wouldn't matter if the rat was yours or the rescue's.) If it's not an abscess (I really hope it is), I would get it tested if you remove it. I don't know a lot about mammary tumours in males, but if it's mammary neutering or an implant may help reduce the recurrence/growth rate by regulating hormone fluctuations, but I doubt it would even be as effective as spays in females. (In my experience, spaying is so much more effective at reducing mammary tumours if it's done before a tumour has developed.)

I wouldn't give him Baytril just yet, you don't know he needs it and it can do more harm than good at this point. You can try doing a compress (I tried with Sophie but it didn't come to a head >() but don't be discouraged if nothing happens.

It does sound like an abscess...sometimes the rat will react to the suture material. I would just watch and wait right now, it sounds too deep for any compresses.

OMG you don't get a break ...do you? :gaah: Sending good vibes to you both.

Always seems like something is wrong ..but I guess thats what happens when you have a large number.

I hope this is "just" an abscess, too

maybe TMZ also called Septra also called Bactrim (depending on where you live and where you get it)
my vet uses this more often than Baytril for abscess, I believe, and reserves the Baytril for URIs
seems to work

I got a pic ..
