Me too. :) If this is just him, I'd be fine, accept him for who he is, lol. I just get the feeling this isn't normal for him, particularly since there's been a noticeable decline. It's difficult when the animal is new to you, I suppose. The big question still remains, whether or not I should go through with the neuter right now.

I'm a worrier, I don't know how helpful it would be. ;)

My father returned tonight from his conference (I know a few of you noticed some missing vets!) and as soon as I told him why I think Nuage is stressed he nixed the surgery. Not for good of course, but he won't do surgery on him while he's this stressed out. As he put it, a simple procedure could go very, very wrong. The part that concerned him the most was how Nuage never leaves his house and the fact that he's snuffling a lot (Anne, if you happen to be reading this, he sounds a bit like S). So we're going to wait a few weeks, calm the little guy down, and then proceed as planned.

Nuage will be going in tomorrow to get his lungs checked out, I don't like how this seems to be getting worse with each day. :(

Thank you, everyone, for your input! It was much appreciated! Hopefully Nuageux will make a recovery sooner rather than later, he's such a sweet boy. Since he's still drinking and eating (despite what his sides indicate) I'm sure he'll be fine with time.

I'm afraid things don't look good for this man. :( Both my father and his colleague think they hear a heart murmur. I've been told "not to get too attached." We started him on antibiotics today. :/

This is on top of my cat being in the clinic for the past week, she just had an endoscopy today. So Jo is very right, it's fantastic having a vet in the family! Though we do get charged for the endoscopy because my dad had to call in a specialist to do that.

ALICE?! wth!? BRONWYN ANNE NEEDS TO BE KEPT IN THE LOOP HERE :redhot: (considers throwing a tantrum)

Bron,

If you feel unable to care for him and his future short-term needs, and haven't gotten too attached, I will take him back in an instant. I bonded strongly with him and am willing to keep him as comfortable as he needs.

Hey Bronwyn, I just saw this thread now! I can't add much about his short time with me, except that he was on aspen shavings for most of it. I put the carefresh in his cage the night before he went to you, as I didn't have any shavings left.

Unfortunately I didn't have a lot of time to spend with him, but he was fairly active in his cage - going up and down the ramp and levels, in and out of his house, and would come to the door to greet me when I was close by. I didn't see any porphyrin or notice any strange breathing.

I'm so sorry to hear that he is not doing well! That's very upsetting news, he's a great little dude. However, heart meds are definitely an option. I was thinking possible heart condition as I was reading through all your posts! He has classic signs, and I do believe heart medication could improve his quality of life and extend the length of it.

Please let me know if you want to investigate that option further and need help. Your dad can discuss with my vet if he would like a medical point of view, but there is also lots of info out there such as in the Rat Guide, and of course many of us have personal experience with it.

I hope your cat will be okay too! It's very tough when things happen all at once. :(

@Sarah: PM is waiting for you, answering your questions. :) If I missed any, give me a poke.

Thank you, all, for kind words you've left for me and Nuage.

Let me be very clear though, when I offered him a forever home, it was not a conditional offer. Yes, the hope was that he could join the girls in the FN, but Nuage is a loved rat with or without testicles, congested lungs, and "broken" heart. He will continue to receive the best care I can offer him, which for the moment is Baytril through injection. Once his lungs are cleared we will be able to tell for sure what state is heart is in, and will proceed from there. Either way, healthy or sick, it is my hope that it is understood he will be provided with love and whatever care he needs.

Me too. ;)

He weighed 420 grams yesterday so I'll keep an eye on that weight. He's so wonderful with the injections, very patient, very submissive. I wish there was a camera handy earlier...I had just injected him with Baytril and cuddled him up in my sweater on a rocking chair by the fire. Islay was sleeping on my feet, and Alice, my cat, snuggled up on my lap right beside him. He's still a bit unsure of what to make of her but she licked his head, giving him quite the hairdo. :giggle: The two were napping on my lap together after that cute gesture.
