Eye lump after enucleation.

Hi guys,

Just wanted some advice for my male rat, Bean. He had surgery almost 2 weeks ago to remove one of his eyes. It was all healing up well, and he was on Metacam for pain relief as well as Baytril to stop any infection.

Now, there is a massive lump in the area. Do you think it’s an abscess? It doesn’t smell weird but it’s appeared pretty quickly. He’s gotten more lethargic the last 2 days. I’ve read that maybe Baytril wasn’t the right/strongest option to give to stop infection after surgery :/ Also read about warm compresses but am pretty clueless overall so just wanted some advice.

I would definitely bring him back in for a recheck. It could be a hematoma/a collection of blood which could resolve itself but an abscess is a big possibility. Baytril is usually good but should be on it for quite some time.
