One more thing... I was at Liston Animal Hospital today and noticed that one of the technicians had a card displayed. He has his own home pet care business. I asked him about it, and he said he will come to your home and check on your pets, administer medications, clean cages, etc. and yes... that includes rats. I can't vouch for him personally, as I haven't hired him for this service, but I wanted to pass the word along, should anyone in Ottawa need this kind of assistance. Just check with Dave at the Liston Animal Hospital.

Grrrr missed your April post - that's good info to have! I didn't really have an emergency-option, but Bank Street Animal Hospital is pretty close to where I am.

Thanks!

(As a general vet, would you recommend that place over Liston? Are the prices about the same, do you know?)

ETA: I have to schedule an appointment to get Badger's lungs listened to. This could be a good opportunity to check this vet out, but I would rather keep them as an emergency if basic check-ups are $60 ;-)

Maybe we should start a new thread for this place? haha

Bank Street Animal Hospital charges higher rates than Dr. Liston does for rats. I forget the exact amount, but somewhere in the $55-60 range I think.

I've brought Petit Chef there for a number of follow ups, and they're okay. My personal preference is still Dr. Liston though. But I should just say that none of the vets I've seen in this town has impressed me as a rat expert. Most have a fair bit to offer, but ya still have to do your homework before you go see them.

and you're right about putting this info in its own thread! I've started one for Bank Street Animal Hospital:

Hello, i know this is an older post, but I have been searching for a good rat vet to take my rat to this week because I think she has a ear infection. Reading this is alot of help, not many vets take rats and I pass there every week.

I still go here. :)
I know he's on vet forums reading up about rats trying to learn more aboot them.

That is wonderful to hear! I know he was good not great but was willing to listen to me when i asked for certain type of treatments for my rats and i used him for my rescue too!

We love Dr. Liston in our household. Dr. Liston is very compassionate, generous, and he is open to listening and researching. Also his prices are good. So yes, we still love him.

But .. over the years, we also have come to regard him more as a family doctor, i.e. a generalist when it comes to rats. We've found him to be pretty good with the run of the mill stuff for rats, but when there was something less common or that I had no clue what it was, we went to someone else.

In my experiences with the other vets in town, I found even the most specialized, highest priced guys didn't always know what was wrong. It was very frustrating. Dr. Liston didn't seem to mind when I'd gotten a second opinion here and there.. no ego.. I liked that too.

Anyway I thought I should post that 'cause I know I've always been very keen on Dr. Liston, and want to make sure I haven't been misleading. i.e... We love him, he's good, but within his limits (in our experiences anyway.)

I can't believe there is a such a cheap vet in ottawa! I have been going to crown pointe. I do like him, but the prices are pretty high!!

Have you ever gone to Liston for things other than URI?

Yes! He's done a great job every time I brought my girls in for tumor removals. Also a few times we brought them in for an abscess (not related to his surgery) and he was very good with them too.

NEUTER INFO

I made that all big and fancy so people scrolling can see it easily. :3

Anyways, had Remy neutered today by Dr. Liston. Everything was great - we're still really happy with Dr. Liston.

We left them with a water bottle and a bag of food which they filled and gave to him after his neuter. ♥
They also gave him some hand towels to hide in and said he was so cute that we could take them home.

Rat Neuter: $100
Metacam at vet: $10.84
Metacam to take home x3: $13.00
Taxes: $16.10
Total Cost: 139.94

TUMOR REMOVAL

Didn't have this done, but Badger has some tumors so we took her in to have them looked at.
Dr. Liston said tumor removals (for unattached mammary, at least) cost $130 a day.

"a day" because if we had Badger worked on he'd have to do two different sessions because she has three tumors plus a growth/woundthing on her side and with her URI he wouldn't want to do it all in one day. Though he suggested we not do it at all because of her UI. :p

Anyways, just thought I'd report that in case anybody was looking around for prices - perhaps give him a call.

Im looking to go their, but no job.. Rat got repsitaory issues! God.. he doesnt do payment either like i have maybe 50$ so far i can spend but he said it might be up to 60$ with everthing.

Most vets don't have payment plans unless they very well and you've been a client for a long while. Maybe you can borrow money from a friend or sell some old books or household items on Craigslist/Kijiji to make up the difference.

hmm thanks for letting us know about this.
i've been looking for a good vet. that people have been to and can tell me a bit about them. i live half to 45 minutes outside of ottawa. and dont want to go all the way there for a fluke vet. so hearing from people saying they have experience with rats and/or will treat them like any other animal is comforting. ill have to check them out next time i need a check up or whatever.

i wonder what they're like about neutering/ spaying and the cost and whatnot. doesnt say much on the website, at least i didnt find anything. i've been looking into this because i want a boy for my girls eventually.

In most cases you'll have to call for pricing and info about neuters and spays. There's a great thread on this forum also about questions to ask your vet before planning surgery.

It's tough finding a vet in town who will do spays. Last year I decided instead to get implants for the girls instead.

Wow nice price! Thanks Roo.

I think this may be posted already, but I didn't see it..so forgive me if I'm being redundant...

Dr. Liston's Animal Hospital also has a second veterinarian now who treats rats. Her name is Dr. Maya Popovic.

RKBusy and I went there this morning with an emergency, and Dr. Maya was able to take us right away. It was our first experience with her, and for a difficult to diagnose issue. We both walked out of there very excited about Dr. Maya's ability and the way she worked with us. She's not an exotic specialist, but she was very good with the very ill boy we brought in. So far.. we both like her a lot!

Also, the prices Dr. Liston's hospital charges are more affordable and with so many rats to rescue, this is a god-send.

So, it's just my personal opinion, but I give a great big thumbs up for Dr. Maya at the Liston Animal Hospital.

I just wanted to bump this and relay some info I received today.
I spoke with someone who works at OPRat Rescue today and she and I both agreed that Dr. Mobarak is extremely expensive. She used to bring the rescue rats to him on occasion but did not like how he handled them, nor did she agree with how much he charges for exams/euth.
She recommended Dr. Liston and his partner Dr. Maya too. She also mentioned a vet at the Carling Animal hospital, but I can't for the life of me remember the name. I'll ask her and post it ASAP.
