So our little gal Hope (who is an 8 month old chihuahua) turned out to have a hernia, she only got diagnosed when she got spayed though the breeders vet. About a month or so later we took her to get her shots she couldn't get till a certain age and took our other dog as well. The vet also looked at her "lump" and said it was an Ingiunal hernia. The vet was surprised the breeder sold a puppy with a hernia, but we told him she didnt have a lump when we saw her, or even picked her up, the lump seemed to show it self a day or two after we got her. He also said he was a little surprised that the vet didnt just fix it when she was being spayed. But our guess is that the vet/breeder coulndt just deside for them selves, they would need our permission for that Anyways we got an estimate and it will cost close to 1000 dollars (959.09) to get that fixed. So please wish us luck in saving up some monday, and for when she does have the surgery that it will go fine!

Poor little thing. Wow, that's an expensive surgery. I too feel the breeder and vet should have had it fixed paid for by the breeder.
Good luck!

One of my foster dogs (Boo) also had one but hers was way worse... she was a found as a stray with it when she was approx. 15 years old. She was in horrible shape and almost didn't make it through surgery but here we are, almost a year later and she's doing great!

You can see it here, warning though, it's quite graphic http://www.flickr.com/photos/27885592@N05/6987014037/

I'm also surprised that the vet didn't fix your girls hernia when she was already under.... Boo got spayed at the same time as she had her hernia fixed (her whole uterus was actually inside the hernia).

In Boo's case, we think she has a hernia because of all the puppies she had... her stomach liner just is very weakened.

Anyway, if Boo got through her surgery, I'm sure all will go well with your girl as well esp. since she's much younger and clearly better cared for than Boo was before she was dumped and came to me.

PS - Boo is a Chi as well.

Most breeders should have a guarantee where they will actually pay for anything health-wise that shows up in the first year (that's obviously their fault I mean).

Lovell was being treated for worms when we picked him up, and though we did a full course it didn't completely eradicate them. I let the breeder know during one of my updates and she actually offered to pay!

Now of course this IS an expensive surgery, but one should be willing to stand by one's animals... Good thing to contact the breeder. Maybe it's a genetic predisposition? Either way, hopefully she will do the right thing.

In the meantime, WHAT a darling you have on your hands! She just radiates personality through the photos! And she looks very happy to have Niles as a warmer in that last photo!

I cant see the pictures either.

But thanks everyone, i did contact the breeder and she would be willing to pay if it was with her vet, but we dont truly trust her vet after we did a little researcher on him plus he said you dont need to get a hernia fixed, only if it gets worse -.-

We are hoping to save a little money before we book an appointment and hopefully we can also do a payment plan.

And Hope is as hyper as always :)

Usually they do fix them when they spay them...not totally sure why they wouldn't but glad it is getting done. Maybe if you spoke with the breeder she would be willing to pay at least half at another vet....

She was found like this, no idea how long she lived with it. She was in horrible shape.. not really in shape to have surgery but without it she would have died for sure. She almost didn't wake up from surgery (she also had a dental and she has a heart murmur plus her age). Initially everybody thought it was a tumor but nope, inguinal hernia.

They fixed that... and then a few days later I noticed that another one popped up on the other side so she went back to the vet. The vet didn't want to fix it as she was in such rough shape and given the fact she barely woke up from the first surgery. We think her stomach lining is so weak from all the puppies that if you fix one, it'll find another way to pop out. Now this second hernia is tiny and actually hasn't popped out since her tummy healed from the first surgery. Anyway, basically we just keep a close eye on her but so far so good.

There's lots of pics on the Bully Buddies FB page, she's a character and we love her dearly http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set= ... 447&type=3

Oh My! So many adorable pictures :) Im glad she is safe now. We are still slowly saving money, but hopefully my sister will remember to call to ask if we can do a payment plan. We may have to do it soon since it is betting bigger.

I thought id let everyone know that Hope's surgery is on Monday. It will be done at the vet clinic i do CO-OP at so i shall be there with her all day and through the surgery. It even turned out to be almost 300 dollars cheaper, plus i trust this vet very much. So much so that i have transferred both my dog's there :)

Wish her luck!
