First a little background. I'm pet sitting two of my good friend's ratties while she's on the east coast for 2 weeks. She recently rescued two lovely little girls. One had a pretty nasty ear infection, the other had not only a peri-urethral abscess/tumor, but two GIANT bolders hanging off her sides.

The day before I got the girls, my friend had her vet do tumor surgery. Her vet is not an exotic specialist. They removed one of the big tumors, the peri-urethral abscess/tumor and that's all they had time for. Poor little Dove was left with a 50 gram tumor. This was so big that she walked hunched over, as not to high center on it.

Although I had her on Cefa, Baytril and Metacam (our meds of choice here, post surgery)....little Dove's tumor incision started to get infected just a few days later. I rushed her to our vet, who confirmed the surgical techniques were probably not the greatest at the other vet, (they didn't shave her well enough and debris from her fur probably infected the surgical area). I also assume her immune system is pretty compromised from hauling those tumors around. Other than the tumors, she was skin and bones.

During the exam, our vet said he needed to go back in and clean out the infection (cut away the infected area and resuture etc)...if he had time, he'd address her last tumor, but it would be a risky surgery due to her age, body weight etc. I called my friend and gave her the news. She knew it was a hard decision...but said to go for it.

I'm happy to report that little Dove came through the surgery with flying colors! He didn't have time to redo that infection incision, but he did clean it up nicely and it looks much better. The tumor removal took over an hour though :sad3: Our vet is an excellent surgeon who is fast and leaves TINY incisions. But in Dove's case....well, you can probably figure what an incision from a 50gram tumor looks like.

Anyway, this is where her saga hopefully starts to take a turn for the better....BUT.......
Due the length of the surgery and the HUGE incision she has....our vet would not risk the time to do internal stitches like usual. Poor Dove has externals and is stuck in an eCollar.

I am actually amazed at how well she's doing in it. Most usually are miserable...she's more ticked off, but still eating, drinking and pottying, just fine.

Now for the scarey pics. Gee, look what happens when I pet sit for friends. :sad3:

Dovey's "good" side...notice how hunched her posture is, from carrying around that bowling ball?

And poor little Frankerat! I've seriously never seen an incision so long on rat in my life (but this was the biggest tumor I've seen removed too).

Ok, now that you feel really sorry for her (trust me, I feel terrible for all of us), I must tell you....she has spunk. She's already mastered that collar and gets around just fine. Tonight, we'll give her a bit of out of collar time (strictly supervised of course) on the bed with her bestpal Hannah (who's ear infection is almost gone by the way).

I hope to post better pics as Dovey heals up.

Awwww, poor sweetie...
I'll bet she's going to feel great without all that extra weight to carry around. It'll just take her a few days to get used to being so light.
And a wise Dr. once told me, it doesn't matter how long the incision is, it still takes the same length of time to heal.
(You know, because it heals edge-to-edge, not length-wise.)
Good thing it's summer! It must be a little chilly without all that fur!

Dove got to come out and see her pal Hannah last night. We started with a little out of collar time for Dovey. But after just 10 minutes (of constant supervision), she just wouldn't stop trying to mess with her stitches. And even Hannah wanted to get in on the act and started pulling at them too  (this doesn't surprise me....if you look at that one pic above of Dove's head, you can see Hannah's power grooming work, even before she had the surgery).

So the collar had to go back on. This didn't slow Dove down one bit. She proceeded to toodle around on the bed, climb the pillows and chase Hannah with her scary "satelite dish".

When I put Dove back in her large carrier, I ended up hanging a hammock for her, which she's enjoying.

I haven't sent there momma any pics...because I think she would only worry...but I have tried to brace her for the mohawk Dove has. She literally has only the hair on her head, and a strip down her back. The rest is nekkidness and stitches. :sad3:

Ok on the serious side, I am really glad Dove has such a good mommy and rattie sitter, to make sure she is well taken care of. But on the other hand I can't stop giggling at the sight of the rathawk. All she needs now is a little blue food colouring... then her attitude will be ready to go!

Well, for Dove, it would have to pink or purple....more girlie :wink2:

Here are some pics of Dove's out time last night with Hannah.

So.......would YOU guys send any of these pics to her mom? She hasn't asked me for any...so maybe I'll just see if I can get her looking the best I can before she actually see her?

On a sad note.....there was on small tumor left on Dovey. It was about the size of cranberry a week ago....but since that giant tumor was removed 2 days ago, it's already gotten larger. Now that the big one is gone, this one appears to be thriving. :sad3: I don't know how many more surgeries this little one could take. Of course, that's not my decision....we'll leave that up to her mom. :sad3:

If I was the mom, I would love to see those pics. She saw that girl with a large tumour for the longest time and now she's tumour free, that must be a wonderful feeling for her.
UGH!! that's so frustrating about the other tumour. Too bad the vet didn't take it out at the same time. :(

In Dove's case, the surgery to take the one huge tumor, and clean up the other two infected incision sites, was a very long surgery. There's just no way he could have taken that other tumor, without risking her life :sad3: Can't remember if I mentioned this, but the previous surgery (at my friend's other vet) took almost 20 minutes just to get her under, then she took a LONG time waking up. I was so worried there was a chance she might not make it, even when our very great vet worked on her. But luckily for Dove, it appears as though her previous problem with anesthesia was also due to the not so great surgery techniques of the other vet too. She did well here, even though she was under for almost an hour and a half (much longer than our vet likes).

Dove has been recovering so well, my friend may very well have our vet remove that other tumor. It's just hard to tell how old Dovey really is. She's got to be at least 18-20 months. Possibly over 2.

A little update on Dovey. She's doing just FANTASTIC. So much so, I really question just how old she is. She moves like the wind, even in that collar! If Hannah is her sister, and I can also use her to try and judge their age, I'd say 18-20 months. So who knows, maybe Dovey can take one more surgery. Especially if it's done at our vet, who would not have to leave such a huge incision the next time. This last tumor is about 1/20th of that other one. But again, I'll leave that up to her momma.

We had both girls out on the bed while we watched tv last night and Dove was all over the place. Both of the prior incisions (from the other vet) that got infected and our vet cleaned up, are now almost completely healed. Barely a scab remains. Her big incision is looking so good, I bet those stitches could come out in just a few more days (her appt is Friday). I'm just so happy she's looking so good, as her mom comes to get them tomorrow.

I am always amazed at just how resilient these little ones are. :joy:

Well, Dove and Hannah's momma is coming to pick them up very soon (her plane will be landing in about an hour and I'll go get her). I am SO going to miss these beautiful girls. My friend lives 2 hours away, so she'll be coming back on Wed to take Dove for stitch removal (so glad she's just coming back down to our vet, rather than going to her own that didn't do such a great job on those first two incisions). I can't wait to see how happy Dove will be to get out of that collar once and for all.

So, these two leave.....and on Thursday, 4 more arrive. :? We have become the vacation station of the rattie elite. :wink2: We barely have time to clean the vacation cottage cage before the next visitors show up. Vistors are fun! :bunnydance:

Well, looks like we'll get to show you more pics of how she's coming along afterall. After taking into consideration the heat (it's over 100degrees here and that's very high for the NW US), and the fact that Dove and Hannah were looking at a 2 hour ride home, only to return again in two days.......her momma decided they could just stay with us until Dove's suture removal on Wed. :joy: So, two more days of fun and cuddles for us and these two lovely ladies.
