I mean bin cage as a travel cage not as a permanent residence. Any ratties of mine will be put up in the CN long term.

However, does a bin cage make a good travel cage? Especially for long travel. Like potentially 3 hours? It seems better than a cat carrier because of the size, and much cheaper than just buying a smaller cage. All I'd have to do is buy it, cut a big hole in the top, and then zip-tie wire mesh over the hole.

I was considering this (Are the measurements okay?): http://www.target.com/p/sterilite-c...purple-latch/-/A-13794509#prodSlot=medium_1_1

It seems big enough, good for a water bottle, food, some fleece, and a nice hidey place.

Let me know!

Depending on the number of rats, suggest a blue rubber maid container.
Cut holes in the lid and in one side,
Cable tie baking cooling racks on the inside of the bin to act as bars and allow for lots of air circulation.

The bin in your picture is hard plastic and will crack if you try to cut it.

Here is my large bin cage and my small rubber made carrier bin cage http://www.ratshackforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=28818&highlight=bin+Cage

Thank you for calling out the plastic; I hadn't even noticed! And baking cooling racks are a much better idea; a little more accessible than the wire mesh in my opinion. What size would you recommend for two young adult (?) boys? There's a chance I could be bringing a pair home (fingers-crossed that things work out with the adoption; I've been anxious about it since I submitted the applications).

We brought our last two home in a cage like this - 6 hour drive

Really? That's great to hear! But I've been considering a bin cage just because it could also double as a "vacation cage" if I made one large enough. When I had my girls, we'd leave them behind if we were only going to be gone a few days, and I'd have a friend check on them every day. But when we would leave for longer periods of time (ex. Winter break, around a week and a half), then we'd bring them along. Their "vacation cage" was not very nice and really clunky; I honestly think a bin cage would be an upgrade.

What do you guys think of having a bin cage as a travel/vacation cage?

We always get sitters.

The most I've ever had at once is two, so bringing them along for the ride has never been too much of a problem! Plus it saves the expense of a sitter - usually a close friend will do it for free, but for some reason, whenever we're out of town, so is everyone else (probably because when we leave it aligns with all of the school breaks).
