A BIG Thank you from Lily

Hey everyone!! I haven't been on in a while, things have been super busy lately :panic: But I wanted to take a minute to say a HUGE Thank You from me and Lily!! You guys helped us so much with her rough start in life, and I don't know what I would have done without the support and advice...

    Rat behavior explanation needed!

Go ahead and assume that they're pregnant. Sounds like they've been together for a while, and impregnation takes 3 seconds for rats.

    Loved Meds, Not Anymore

Hey guys, Have you ever had a rattie that LOVED the medicine and practically stole the syringe out of your hand, and then a few weeks later wants nothing to do with it? I'm just curious. It seems so odd. And I HATE scruffing them. :(

HAPPY UPDATE - HELP PLEASE!!! - Chronically Sneezy Rattie

Yep, the doxy and baytril did the job in the end. I'm keeping her on doxy for another week past recommendation though, because I feel that it would be best, given all your guys' advice :D

THANK YOU ALL!!! You are all so wonderful and knowledgeable!! I am PSYCHED that I found this site. It's so amazing!! Here's an updated pic of Lily, a little bigger now. :) (sorry it's blurry, she was caught in a rare goofy mood, but it was night and not good camera time :P) And yes, she's...

HAPPY UPDATE - HELP PLEASE!!! - Chronically Sneezy Rattie

Lily is FINALLY starting to seem like she's getting better!! She's a goofy little baby!! Loves to play and HARDLY sneezes now. So in the end (hopefully the end of troubles) it took two weeks of amoxi, two weeks of baytril doxy combo, and a week of doxy alone!!! It sucks that I had to give...

HAPPY UPDATE - HELP PLEASE!!! - Chronically Sneezy Rattie

Lily is doing that thing where she looks like she's choking again and goes to the top of the cage and looks upward like she cannot breathe. :( Can anyone tell me what the heck I'm supposed to do here? I'm a good rattie mom and I took her to the vet, went through three different meds, and tons...

    Baby Cereal

So what's the scoop on this? I see that many of you feed your ratties baby cereal. Why? Which brand? How prepared? Etc.

HAPPY UPDATE - HELP PLEASE!!! - Chronically Sneezy Rattie

He weighed her the first time - one ounce. He said she looked twice the size the second time, but didn't adjust the meds....

    Children's Benadryl

Seems to, but I'm only home part of the day. If she's sneezing more often, can I give it to her as needed?

    Children's Benadryl

What if it IS helping? I give it to her during "fits" and she stops, so can I always give it to her everyday for the rest of her life?

HAPPY UPDATE - HELP PLEASE!!! - Chronically Sneezy Rattie

She has been on the combo for about a week now. I asked him to up the baytril given that she has grown, and he said she was still "about the same size" so it would be fine. I don't know, seems funny to me....

HAPPY UPDATE - HELP PLEASE!!! - Chronically Sneezy Rattie

Does anyone else find this strange - even though Lily has grown since she started her antibiotics 3 weeks ago (she has doubled in size again, I'd estimate 4 ounces at this point) the vet has NOT raised her dosage of baytril or doxy. When I asked him why it was still for what he calculated her...

    Children's Benadryl

I use children's benadryl for sneezing, but only when she is actively sneezing, but this is becoming more often, so I wanted to ask and make sure I'm not over-using it.

HAPPY UPDATE - HELP PLEASE!!! - Chronically Sneezy Rattie

Nothing. They are in a huge bird cage that has a pull out drawer so there is not bedding of any kind. They lay on hammocks that are made of fleece and washed with fragrance free detergent.

    Children's Benadryl

Is there any time period that expires as far as giving her benadryl or can I give it to her everyday for the rest of her life? It seems to help her, but I didn't know if it could only be used for a week at a time or something, etc. Thanks!

HAPPY UPDATE - HELP PLEASE!!! - Chronically Sneezy Rattie

Yep! No propryin anywhere, she eats, plays, drinks, comes out, takes treats, popcorns, and bruxes. That's what's so frustrating, she constantly sneezes and cleans her nose of the snot. But that's IT! No other signs besides the occasional squeeky breath now and again. What does this sound...

    Cage experience?

Be aware of the bar spacing. If you have females, a ferret cage may have too wide of space between bars - 1 inch sometimes. Females should have 1/2 inch spacing. So be sure to check on that before purchasing a ferret cage for rats. :)
