Five ways to tell the difference: from http://www.ehow.com/how_7826138_identify-infant-mice-rats.html

1. Check and compare the size of the rodents. If they are larger and weigh more comparatively than the other rodents at the same age, the babies are rats.

2. Examine the tail. If it is thick and shorter than its body, it is a baby rat. Long and thin tails indicate baby mice.

3. Ears are quite large when compared to a mouse's head. This is not the case with rats, for the ears are small in relation to their head. This is one of the best ways of determining the difference between the two.

4. Lift the baby's muzzle. A narrow and sharp muzzle indicates a mouse, while blunt and large identifies an infant rat.

5. Check the size of the eyes. Mice have prominent and large eyes while rat eyes are small.

looks like a baby rat to me, but I've not seen very many baby mice !!

the tail seems too short for a mouse.

edited: oh I see, the ears are kinda big compared to baby rat's ears. the tail still seems short to me but I guess it gets longer as they age......?

It looks like a rat to me. It's not very developed but is already quite a bit longer than the quarter. Mice would be much more developed before they got that long.

Where did you find this sweet little guy? (or girl?) Poor baby...is he/she all alone, or hurt or anything?
