Why Did My Rat "Talk"

Hi! I used to have a trio of rats name Turnip, Toast, and Porkchop. Toast died of a brain tumor at 2 1/2 years old, and Turnip followed soon after. The second I came home from the vet without Turnip, Porkchop began grunting at me! I assume he was trying to speak to me because he was lonely at the time (we later got him new rattie companions). I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else?

One of my boys(Floki) does a weird sort of grunting sound when he get to have play time out of his cage or if he is excited in any way. So I wouldn't be surprised if Pork chop was trying to "talk" to you asking where his brothers were.

The grunts aren't URI symptoms are they?

Not that I'm aware. My vet doesn't seem worried. But if it worries you take them to see the vet. $60-$80 is worth the peace of mind that they're ok
