Which woods are safe for rats?

Hello!

I'm looking to cut some branches off of live trees to make so rat chews. I know apple orchards are safe, but what about other woods such as maples, firs, pines, aspen, etc? Does anyone know anything about this? lol

I heard cherry wood is unsafe?
Also, is it better to freeze or bake the twigs?

I would say no to the pine, because of the phenols. It's on the "do not use" list for bedding so I'd avoid that one.

I see pine, aspen, cherry, maple and fir on the no-go list.

Also I would freeze it (for 48 hours) but I am terrified of putting wood in my oven. >_>

I heard that apple trees seem to be a favourite as well as cherry tree.
