So now its time for the new crew to have their own thread. I cant believe how this week has gone!

Just to fill you in, and put their whole story in on place.

I took in two foster boys last Friday, August 23rd. This thread was made to try and find them a home, and ask questions, as they were my first fosters, and I have only had my two boys for just over a year.
http://www.ratshackforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&p=473471#p473471
They were coming from a very loving home, but with a dog who was trying to eat them, and they werent getting the attention they needed. Long story short, they had been rescued in May from St Lawrence College after being abandoned in residence. I decided they would be better at my house for the time being, and I could try and love them up for their new home.

Once they arrived, we realized how different they were from our boys! How lucky we were to have our squishy, confident mush balls! The two foster boys were skittish, shy and not too sure about anything. We quickly started teaching them new things, like how to eat meal worms (that did not go well, they nibbled on them... causing them to ooze out their insides... YUCK!), treat pillows, uncooked pasta (the excitement when we finally heard the tic tic tic tic!!) any most importantly, having too many places to nap! These guys loved their first pop box!! Anything safe and dark for hiding in! I was sure to find them both there every morning!

Another reason they came to me was to work on some behaviour issues we thought they had. We thought the bigger boy was picking on the smaller one, he was covered in scratches. I do not doubt that it was boredom and dominance display, but after posting pictures here, Joanne mentioned it may be mites. Being a little new to all things rats, I hadnt thought of this. The girl I got them from a vet tech... So I started researching and he looked like a textbook case of mites! Once we really started watching they were scratching A LOT more then my boys! I talked to the girl I got them from and she was certain it wasnt mites. But that didnt seem to make sense. Everything I was reading pointed to mites.

At this time I was still looking for a home for these two, which is incredibly hard! I respect everyone who works with rescues so much after this! I had many people interested, but I couldnt deem any of them suitable enough for these two. One family was so interested, but they had dogs and a small child. Others who hadnt had rats before, and I really was of the belief these two wouldnt be good first rats.

I wanted to start intros with my boys, because if everyone got along they could all live happily in the single CN together. Also, as Shelagh mentioned to me, it would be a good learning experience if anything. Everyone, Jorats in particular was so helpful in answering all my questions, and really pointing me in the right direction with intros.

After three uneventful (and downright BORING) intros done on Thursday and Friday, I wasnt sure what the next steo was. Jenny made a kind offer to come treat everyone with Revolution. Taking that worry off my shoulders. So she and Shelagh came by last night, and while we dosed everyone, they were climbing in and out of each other cages! I guess that was intro #4! Shelagh saw nothing at all was happening, no one was bothered or concerned to have other rats in their cage. So she said lets toss all four in the CN and sit back to watch for close to three hours.

It was a little more eventful then our previous intros, but that doesnt say much. It was very peaceful! Couldnt have planned for things to go better! After Jenny and Shelagh left last night, my boyfriend and I talked a lot. He said well I guess they are staying, and I said well that would be nice... look how at home they seem! We are obviously the best home for them!

So I would like to proudly introduce my new crew. Never thought I would have my own little pack! I am the happiest rat mom!

Wembley (who we think is the Alpha, as he is reacting to more).

One last photo of everyone from last nights 'teeth brushing'! (we usually say our good nights to the boys while brushing our teeth, they sit on our shoulders while we brush our teeth - this be a bigger to-do now! But I hope as can continue our teeth brushing routine with all four boys!).

Thank you again! <3

wow! There boys were definitely meant to end up in your home! What lucky little pipsqueaks, with a whole happy colony now, and a wonderful mommy to love them. It just seems like everything fell into place for you and finding adopters was so hard because with your boys, it was all meant to be.

but man.. I don't know how you can brush your teeth with all of them on your shoulders! I only have my two girls right now, and I can only imagine.. someone would jump in the sink, someone with try and eat my tooth brush, someone would jump down my shirt with cold wet feet.. then someone would eat the toothpaste and I'd have a heart attack and call poison control, LOL.

I also can't help but feel it was meant to be. I am just so happy with how everything turned out. It all smoothly fell into place. It amazes me. I am still a little shocked.

I have a whole pack of shoulder rats, so it's not too hard Kat. They are also too chicken to even think about jumping into the sink or down my shirt. They usually just crawl from my shoulders to my boyfriends and back and forth. They are completely content on your shoulder! At least while your standing... While your sitting its a whole different game of try and escape.

WOW am I ever overdue for an update on my boys!

Soon after Mokey and Nai a string of URI and abscesses began.

Nai's abscess reappeared 4 times. The first two times we went to the vet, and the second two he drained it on his own (thank goodness! I cant handle the smell!!) and I cleaned it out. But for the past couple months now *crosses fingers* it hasnt come back!

Wembley went to the vet in September for a URI, and then again in December with Gobo as they both had URIs. Wembley has been doing well, but Gobo appears to be squeaky again. We will go to the vet soon, although he isnt getting worse, so I have been trying to give him this omega 3 immune booster stuff (called Sunshine Factor I think), and he seems to be doing alright. Its only been a couple days.

All four are getting a long well. Flawlessly in fact. Wembley is still our alpha, and has his perch on top of the cage to keep an eye on the living room.

They have gotten many of my friends to fall in love with them. They even got a gift (YOGIES!) about a month ago from a friend of mine. I was so touched when she came by with a gift for the rats.
Pictures I took of the boys enjoying their gift (I have become slightly obsessed with making collages on my phone).

Having four makes for a mandatory cage cleaning every Sunday. My boyfriend says they are a bit smelly, but I dont notice. I have an awfully poor sense of smell. But we recently discovered the boys LOVE of newspaper. They put it in every hammock and FILL the Spudnik with it to make a cozy little nest.

Now time for some more recent pictures.

Rarely do I every see Wembley and Gobo curled up together.

Thanks! I think they are a very handsome bunch.

Looks like he's going in for a kiss *heehee*

And Mokeys favourite spot. Minus Mokey though haha. I thought I was clever putting this on the top of the cage. No one would ever use it when it was inside the cage, and now its a prime nap spot!

What a truly wonderful story with such a happy ending for your family!! I am in awe of all the adorable pictures you have - such a bunch of cuties! So very happy for you :)
:balloons3:

Wow you got bunch of cuties there it looks like they are so happy in their loving caring home. Totally dig the decorations too looks like a lot fun even if I'm not a rat lol :p

Thanks! Sometimes I still cant believe how lucky we have been. Its like they knew each other before or something. They are a happy bunch.

I LOVE to decorate their cage. They have a little rattie palace. A lot of my friends call it a condo not a cage.

Little Mokey did something to his foot yesterday. He's moving fine and climbing about. Acting very normal. He's just not using his foot. I am going to get infant ibuprofen today, and will check on him in a minute. It was pretty swollen, but he had climbed into the Spudnik last night and was snoozing there. So I think it looks worse then it is. Still I am a worried rat mom! First swollen leg we have had.

He has been given meds, they are very tasty! He ate them off a spoon no problem.

I am keeping the cage closed, so they dont have access to their top of the cage hang out spot. I dont want Mokey climbing that much. He seems to be hiding from the other boys, I keep finding him on his own, and whenever I take him out, and put him back the others go check him out and there always some squeaking. I think they are just trying to pin him a bit and groom him, but hes not liking it.

The bottom of his foot seems a bit dry because of the inflammation. Can I put anything on it?

I just watched Mokey and scratch himself with his swollen foot, and hes walking on it a bit. I gave him a second dose of ibuprofen a little whole ago, and it looks like he is feeling better! His foot isnt looking much better yet though.

He's walking on it pretty consistently. I am so relieved to see him feeling better.

Is there anything I can put on the bottom of his foot? The skin looks dry and cracked.
