Ok, so I know dog food is not energy dense enought for rats because a dogs main energy source is protein and a rats main energy source is carbs right? I might have gotten that mixed up, but no sure. BUT, what about vegetarian dog foods for rats? Look at Natural Balance vegetarian formula:
Brown Rice, Oatmeal, Cracked Pearled Barley, Peas, Potato Protein, Canola Oil, Potatoes, Tomato Pomace, Vegetable Flavoring, Flaxseed, Potassium Chloride, Choline Chloride, Taurine, Natural Mixed Tocopherols, Spinach, Parsley Flakes, Cranberries, L-Lysine, L-Carnitine, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Dried Kelp, Vitamin E Supplement, Iron Proteinate, Zinc Proteinate, Copper Proteinate, Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Potassium Iodide, Thiamine Mononitrate (Vitamin B-1), Manganese Proteinate, Manganous Oxide, Ascorbic Acid, Vitamin A Supplement, Biotin, Calcium Pantothenate, Manganese Sulfate, Sodium Selenite, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B-6), Vitamin B-12 Supplement, Riboflavin (Vitamin B-2), Vitamin D-2 Supplement, Folic Acid.
18% Protein
8% Fat
When I look at the first few ingredients on this and then Harlan, NB sounds 100% more healthy. But then you have to look at the vitimans and minerals and that can be a problem so you just need to supplement it will a mix somewhat like suebees (but I would cut out the dried fruit and all the sugar and salt and stuff like that) and then a wide variety of fruits and veggies everyday.
Right now I am feeding an organic, high quality, dog food and I do admit my rats are a bit chubby and not as hyper as they were. So I have cut down on the dog food and added more grains and veggies to the diet. I'm guessing that the problem is all the meat in the dog food. So I have decided to switch to NB vegetarian formula and see how that turns out.
Just wanted to let you guys know of my experience and my ideas
Any comments are welcome!
