We all get them and we all tend to love them. Those untouchable rats. The ones who you pick up and they well scream with love for you.
We go through our share of unsocial rats in our rescue. Babies are the hardest because they are so stinking fast!
We have been using a few tricks to socialize the babies and other rats around here and it has been working.
Keep a small cage near by. One they cannot get out of. It helps you if you need to get up you can lock them up. You can use your foot to get them back on the couch if they decide the floor is amazing looking. I told my rats it is full of lava and alligators but the babies still try to run off the couch on occasion.
I have a chair and ottoman, I have the cage nestled against the arm of the chair and they can run in the space given.
Down the shirt, I would advise two shirts to keep your chest from being maimed by little nails.
Pull the cage up to the chair. It helps them to learn to come in and out of the cage, it builds confidence!
Blocking the exits with other items, soft carriers
My new favorite and it has worked wonders, only some of these babies were born here the others came here unsocial.
Put a blanket on your legs, tuck your legs in leaving a little room for movement. I tuck my feet under my whole right side and leave an exit on my left side so they can go to the cage for breaks. But giving them one entrance and exit helps keep them contained. Rats are smart and they learn that where it is and they keep coming back. Keep in mind they get hot under there so a thin blanket it best during warm months. Put them on your legs and let them run or hide.

My set up as a whole.
You can see the love
When you see them fighting around, join in. Once they see your hands as a play toy your life is good.
There are many other ways to socialize but this has been the best for us so far. We have more rats to do at a time than most so it works out well.
You can work on trust training by giving treats from your hands. You can also work on it by feeding from a spoon. There are millions of ways to make these guys see the light of how much fun we can be. I think we have a thread on trust training your rats as well. I will look later.
