quickupdate: I make a papaya juice and give him every hour. And a poop come out. his condition now is not improved nor worsen. I keep massaging him every day hopefully he can recover soon

Just a note, you said you are massaging his abdomen? Thats good, should help him make bowel movement. But he is mobile again now so tbat should be enough. If he only did one poop today, and yesterday he did normal amount, give him another day before making any changes. Just my opinion but i would not rush to judgement. Give him a day to stabilize if his meds are, in fact, causing constipation. Very nice to see such a dedicated, caring rattie mom.

actually he is not moving much, just go walk or run for 5 minutes and he will sleep for the whole day. I think he will get numb so I massage his back, abdomen, hand and feet slowly.

Oh, ok, i see. Thats a great way to stimulate bowl movements and digestion. And a whole bunch of other benefits, like circulation, CNS, muscle apathy. Lots of good things come from massages. I used to massage my boy with HLD, and it didn't trally hrlp his ability to walk, but im sure it helped his circulation and loss of muscle tone. He just passed last week and I'm still extremely heartbroken. He was my latest movie buddy. We would watch a movie together while laying in bed and I would slowly stroke his back, scratch his sides, and massage his hind legs and hips while he would lick my skin and nibble my fingernails at the same time. Miss him dearly.

I'm sorry I was away this weekend with limited access to Internet. If it's a brain tumour then the prednisone should hopefully help shrink the tumour at least for a little while. No more seizures? You have all sorts of bases covered, antibiotics And steroids are a good overall treatment.

now, he cant even swallow liquid, no movement from his body, he is sleeping with eye open. I am really sad and confused at this time, one side, my father said it is better to let him go by nature, but my feeling really hurt to see him in this condition, I am considering euthanasia but I dunno if the vet here capable doing it humanely.

so guys, RIP oreo, I keep praying to God wishing he could die naturally, and He granted it. 11.58 (GMT+7). Goodbye my sweetie boy, you do not have to feel pain anymore

Im so so sorry. You sincerely love him, i can say that, and, you did everything you could. In his last days if you couldn't heal his body, you healed his soul. You gave him the one thing he rrally needed the most, which was all of your love and compassion. I think he could feel that, which washat he needed most to jelp him let go when it was time. I sgree thst watching him like that is terrible, and you were contemplating eithaneuth, but he helped make the decision easy for you and went peacefully. I can see how much you loved him, and i can tell you this.... You gave him the best life he could have ever had, and unfortunately these little bundles of emotion are not with us long, so they leave a huge mark on us. But he is now running pain free and with all his friends who were waiting for him. As i said, i just lost 2 of mine, 1 of which i had been basically keeping here with us by giving him Ensure, which was all he could manage to eat. But he lived about 6 months like that!!! And when i realized his condition was critical 6 months ago, he had lost a lot of his weight, and the Ensure actually put some weight back on him! Anyway, and then there is Silver, my heart and soul for quite some time. He couldn't walk anymore with his HLD, but he tried, and he turned into a complete love bug near the end. I don't know what actually caused him to pass, but he fell off the bed and I found him on the floor under my bed, gone. So they only have a short time with us, but its a whole lifetime to them. Your boy Oreo lived a good life, a GREAT life with you. Keep that in mind. And he passed peacefully, without any real suffering, just a few hard to watch moments. So he lived the best life he ever could have, thanks to your love and caring. Give him a memorial service and honorable burial. RIP Oreo.

i am really sorry for your lost too and thank you for comforting me, reading your reply make me cry again, I really hope I can think like that but at the same time, I also feel guilty. The first rat I lost, named bandit, for the whole of his life, he never get sick, he is very strong, but because he really love climbing, ghe got bumblefoot and get severe, before too late, I bring him to vet to cut off his infection. after the surgery done (only about 5 minutes) he couldnt wake up from anasthaesia. I am really heartbroken that time because the last time I saw him is he went to the surgery room, andI got called the doctor said that bandit is very weak. I tried to call his name out and praying but none happen. I am actually grateful that o-chan (the nickname I give to oreo) sleeping next to me just now, he just sleep soundly, and suddenly I heard nsqueaky sound from his nose, he is breathing hard for about 15s and I know it is the time. I keep telling him “it’s okay baby, I love you so much, and God bless you” and patting his chest slowly. and there he is now not feeling any pain anymore. He is buried at my house garden, next to bandit. I really want to thank all the people who help me, accompany me, and those who wishing for the best for oreo. RIP oo-chan, I love you.

Oh wow, your reply really hit me hard, now you got me about to cry. I wosh i was able to tell you this before you had Bandits surgery. First and foremost, every vet will tell you prior to surgery that rats ate very small animals and anesthesia, even for humans, is a very dangerous thing! Rats are very small, and usually have some sort of illness you might not even know about, often Myco, and anesthesia is ALWAYS dangerous, and any vet who doesn't warn you about that, and that they might die, is NOT a vet you want to have operate on your beloved pet. That said, it seems to be all too common that vets oversedate the rat prior to anesthesia. For one thing, I will NEVER let a vet use injections to sedate and anesthetize my rats EVER again. Lets Lets just say i had a very similar experience as you, only a routine neutering, which ended with them telling me to take him home and keep jostling him around to help him come out of it. Well, he was not coming out of it, so i took him to MY vet (another vet did the surgery, it was a foster rat) and they sadly told me to keep trying, there was nothing they could do, it was up to him now. He died in my hands a few hours later. I was devastated, he never should have died. So I learned one very important thing, only perform a procedure that needs anesthesia when there's absolutely no other option!!! Second...NEVER let them use injections!!! ALWAYS use gas!!! I will say it again... ALWAYS use gas!!! And better to UNDERsedate than oversedate!!! I rather they have to go through a little pain than die! Also, even use gas to euthanize, the readon being, mist vets are not experienced enough to do a euthanasia on a animal as small as a rat with an injection. First, they HAVE to hit a vein with the sedative, but they often are not good enough, so to be safe, they are taught to use plenty of sedative, so that if they miss, the injection into the rats muscles will be enough to sedate them. Unfortunately I have also witnessed this horrible way of overcompensating for their inadequacies as veterinarians!!! What happens next is the vet is supposed to wait until the sedative takes effect, at which point the injection that stops their heart is given. If done correctly its a painless and effective way to go. But if done as I just described, the sedative takes longer to take effect, but when it finally does, they are basically massively oversedated, and while awaiting the injection to stop their heart they die from suffocation because they are so oversedated that they are paralyzed and can not breathe. If you know what is happening you csn hold them up so that they can get air, but the vet just lays them on the table to wait and while he is waiting the poor rat is suffocating. So i always insist on using gas, which takes longer, so the rat is probably pretty frightened since its not as fast, but he will still peacefully just pass out and never wake up, not lie on a cold metal table, unable to breathe, slowly suffocating, while totally conscious and able to see, hear, and think. So please, PLEASE insist on your vet using gas. It takes longer and costs the vet more money, but...unless your vet is an excellent rat specialist, i promise you they will never tell you that they are actually giving your pet a massive dose of sedative by carelessly injecting it into his tail and not even caring if they hit his vein. It's a disgusting, unethical, immoral, unprofessional, and unacceptable way to euthanize. Oh, and it is terrifying and painful for your ratty of course. So I am very sorry about Bandit. If there is anything good to come out of this, Bandit gave his life so that you could read this, and make sure it never happens again to any of you rats. Bandit will probably save many rats from suffering while being euthanized, which is supposed to be peaceful and pain free, and maybe even from dying because of being oversedated during a simple surgery. Bandit sacrificed himself so that others may live, hes gonna forever be a hero to your future ratties. And please don't feal guilty, you didn't know, your vet should have though. But i know just how you feel, my boy Silver just passed after falling from the bed, and i have been beating myself up over it ever since, even though he was 2 years old and had HLD badly. I am very glad your boy Oreo got to pass at home with you, comforted by your holding him. You did all you could, and he knew that. He was ready, he was sleeping, and in your arms, and at peace. He was ready. So dont be sad, he lived a great life with you. He would want you to know that. Well, hope you read this long post, and it made sense, and you got something out of it. My condolences to you and your family, your rattie family, if you have any more. Im sorry.

Firstly, yeah he does not tell me how danger is anaesthesia. he always said that "oh this is a minor surgery, no need to worry, it will be done in 5 minutes." He indeed used gas anaesthesia, but yeah I do not know what happen in the surgery room, I just imagine bandit will be struggling inside because its not me who hold him. I'm just feeling guilty why I do not request to go inside the surgery room and watch him, because of that I cannot see him for the last time. And the vet said he might get cardiac arrest, and usually for dogs who want to get surgery, they have to take a blood sample. Finally, I yell at the vet, why dont you do that to my rat. I was very angry that time, that he do not tell me about the blood test and he do not do it to my rat. And again, I wish with all these experiences, my last rat won't experience the same case. This is my last rat, named Pichu, I brought him home after bandit passed away to accompany oreo, sadly he is now alone. I want to say sorry to Bandit, Oreo to be the first rat that I have, me lack of experience to raise them, and finally I want to thank you to them for filling my day and memories, cheer me up every time I encounter problems, and greet me every time I'm back home. I do not intend to get a new one, my heart cant handle it. But, if needed, if I have to rescue one, I would love to take one.
