I have been to the vet twice now and the vet said he isn't sure what's going on with Peanut to see a specialist but I was wondering if any of you know what's going on with her. The stuff that is coming out smells and looks like cottage cheese.

That looks like a nasty abscess.. If there are any small animal vets around you should go there to get her on antibiotics... Saline flushes would be a good idea but make sure it's only Salt and water that's in it. Is she able to urinate still.? It looks pretty bad- but rats are known for healing fast and infections look awful every time

I have been doing salt water rinses for a couple days and doxycycline. She is still urinating and eating and drinking. She seems to continue to pick at it.

If she's picking at it then she's probably in pain- do you have any Metacam or Infant ibuprofen.?

No I don't but I can get some .
So sorry for the delayed response- I would say get some yes. The only problem is that I don't know how to dose things correctly so I'll have to get in touch with someone who has more experience... How is she doing.?

She's doing good and acting perfectly normal so I'm hoping for the best!

Good.! How does it look.? Because she might have just been cleaning it
It looks like she got all the cottage cheese gunk out. I've just been giving her salt water soaks and keeping her house clean. The vet that I went to went to was a vet I went to for previous rats so I trusted them. I don't think they knew what it was. Thinking like you said an abccess because she is acting normal and no fever or anything

I'd say you're doing good then.! May I ask if she has a cage-mate.? And what bedding you use.? I'm just trying to guess at what may have caused it. If I step out of bounds at all let me know because I have no filter.!

No I appreciate it a lot! I don't have many people to talk to about rats or that know about rat care. She is by herself because the other rat I have doesn't get along together. I use baby fleece blankets and news paper.

Hmm okay.! If she's young I would recommend getting her a friend but if she's an older gal then I'd say your attention is enough. I like the fleece and paper.! Very glad it's not wood shavings- she might have just gotten a scratch that turned into an abscess for no reason- one of my guys got one randomly too. I do have another question if you don't mind- what's she eating every day ?

I originally had the two of them together but they would pick at each other and fight. I would find scratches and blood marks on their tails so I separated them. I give them oxbow and then either fruit or veggies too.

Ahh alright- if you ever want to try and reintroduce them to each other there are a ton of methods.! If not then I understand that- and I'm happy about the food choices too- seems like you definitely did your research. Back to the original topic- keep watching it and doing what you're doing and she should heal up quickly. Sometimes flukes happen- I don't think it was anything you did

I'm glad I could help out- I've had three rats that developed abscesses and all three healed beautifully. You couldn't even tell something happened.! Hows she healing today.?

Hmm.. It's good it's healing- can you get a needle-less syringe and try to flush that out.? The puss really shouldn't be in there- it'll probably cause another abscess if that heals around it
