My group of 12, the remainder of Templtons and Dopeys group are aging. Bindi, Isis, Skittles and Pika are about 26 months old now. We finally made it to two with some of my ratties. I found Isis gasping in the cage the other night. I though we would lose her. I pulled out every med in my arsenal and put her on it. Finally yesterday she started walking around. Last night she was out for out time her first since Tuesday. She spent two days in a hospital cage just sleeping and breathing hard.
I took Isis, Bindi, Edgar, Eli, Horatio, Pika and Algernon to the vet yesterday for heart checks. I decided that surprise heart issues will not exist in my rat room after loosing them all to heart problems. To my total and complete surprise my biggest rat Edgar who weight in at just over 2lbs does not have a heart problem. My vet laughed when I told him I did not want the obese animal talk because i have tried. I explained they have free range for 8 hours a day at least, i only feed veggies and a low protein lab block. I told him i am sure being over weight has something to do with the heavy breathing so he says "ya think?"
Edgar and eli are about 17 months now, not old at all but since they are chubbers I needed them checked.
Eli does have a heart issues he is now on enalapril and vetmedin.
Eli is a big boy
Edgar is by love bug boy. Loves to sleep between my feet.
Algernon my last survivor of Templeton, Loki , Ludo and Mally. I think he is completely blind. he seems to have difficult time with walking and so on. Sadly I am seeing the same signs as I seen in the other boys, he walks funny but it isnt HED something is off on him just not sure what. He is now about 21 months old. he has a heart problem too and is now on meds. Hoping we can get him past august 26th which is his 2nd birthday.
Pika is about the same age as the girls give or take a month or two. My girl is no longer my devil, she is such a licker and just a total gem. She is aging a bit faster than the rest of them, right along with Bindi.
Isis
This is Isis two days ago, very sick little girl
Today she wouldnt sit still for a picture. The meds are working on her, she is on borrowed time but happy to explore the rat room again. That is enough for me either way.
Lucy last of the school girls. Has HED walks with her butt really low, horrible set of lungs on her and noisy. Hasnt slowed her down one bit.
she is about 2 give or take.
Bindi looking old but healthy otherwise. they love the new hammock from petunia.
Skittles is by far my favorite girl. she has always been my shoulder girl, the one to run to me and the one with the most kisses. She is 26 months old now and doesnt show it at all. She birthed babies from a neutered boy, survived the espay and a tumor removal a week later. My girl is a trooper.
Her and isis are my first official rats, my first girls, my first everything. I know their loss will hit me hard. two years in april I have shared every single day with them.
My little naked man Horatio. He came to me last july with the Shakespeare babies. Still hates me but allows me to feed him good food :laugh4: Medicine is a bugger, burrito wrap or no meds for him. I think jorats guessed him around 17 months so maybe 18 months now. His heart is good but he is losing weight. He dont seem affected at all he runs and plays.
it has already been a rough year with losses I know i have a bunch more coming this year. I have finally got over the fear of it and I am becoming more at ease. I hate it but I know that these guys know a good life. I loved them to pieces and I will mourn them all when the time comes. Till then we shall enjoy our time together.
