Nadia Masoudi has a vision to see the world’s population become fully vegan by the year 2375. The beginning of this quest begins on Saturday, July 24 on the first annual Animal Freedom Day – a global event to raise awareness for the need of animal rights in every country.

Animal Freedom Day is the ambitious brainchild of Masoudi, an 18 year old animal activist from Ontario, Canada. The event will focus on getting people from every walk of life and from every part of the globe to refrain from eating animals or animal by-products for one day. Animal Freedom Day hopes to ultimately put an end to slaughtering animals, animal abuse and the creation of alternative plant-based foods.

The event will be launched from the Burlington Jazz Festival where the day’s activities will be webcast with live interviews via Skype. It is the first time an animal rights event will be streamed – around the world. There will also be updates on the Animal Freedom Day – Facebook page.

Masoudi’s plan is to change the way the world perceives animals – one day at a time.

The first year Animal Freedom Day will be held for one 24-hour period and organizers are asking people to eat a vegetarian diet for that day. The second year the event will expand to two days and supporters will be asked to stop eating animal products for that time period.

Each consecutive year Masoudi plans to extend Animal Freedom Day by one additional day, until finally it will encompass an entire year – with supporters becoming permanent vegans. Her calculations put this achievement in the year 2375.

Several well-known celebrity animal activists have joined to help make the first Animal Freedom Day successful. Some of these people are: actor Woody Harrelson, photographer Nigel Barker, science broadcaster David Suzuki and NHL player George Laraque.

The mission of Animal Freedom Day is to raise awareness about the abuses at factory farms, promote veganism and foster the creation of legislation to protect animals.

Here are ways listed on the Animal Freedom Day website to show your support:

Refrain from eating meat, poultry, fish/seafood, milk, eggs or animal by-products.
Do not hunt or fish.
Do not wear clothing made from animals.
Consider adopting a homeless animal.
