im sure most people and fellow rat lovers of the board already have a source for doxy and kno how to figure out compounding/dosage ..but for those who might be like me, and a little new to it, heres a couple of links on meds.

The first link is to 1800 pt meds who sells the tablets
http://www.1800petmeds.com/Doxycycline-prod10340.html

The 2nd link is to a discussion on the mathematics of how to figure out dosing (if u are new to it, take the time to read the explanation on how to get to the end result please. The reading is worth the knowledge u will gain and will help with making sure u kno what u are doing w the meds-and why)

hope this helps

That looks like a good site. Capsules are always easier to deal with too.
I got a little confused though with how they explain the dosing.

We use dose (recommended by ratguide) x weight / (divided) by med concentration which is the mg/ml on the bottle.
But we can reduce the potency of the drug by adding liquid to it. So if your pill is 100 mg/ml and you add 4ml of water to it, you bring down your med to 25mg/ml and that makes dosing easier.

So say your rat is 500 grams. and your med is 20mg/ml and the rat guide recommends a dose of 10mg/kg you would:

10 x 0.500 grams / 20 = 0.25 would be your rat's dose either twice a day or once a day whatever is recommended by the rat guide.

The Doxy on that webpage is by prescription only. They either call your vet or you can mail them your script.

I actually have a slightly different way of doing the math I find less confusing. Similar though.

Figure out dosage the same way, dose(recommended by rat guide or debbie) X weight then I find out how many MG are in the pill I need to dilute and I divide that by the dose. So for Doxy my pills are 100mg and a 1lb rat gets 2.5mg. So 100/2.5 = 40 doses. I then figure out how much liquid I want to make each dose. say .3ml and go 40X.3 = dilute by 12ml.

The dosing calculation is definately the most difficult part of it all - altho getting my little girl to take it is going to definately be right up there too ..sigh :gaah:

you can get doxy and baytril from:
Jedd’s Pigeon Supplies, 800-659-5928 ask for Greg, doxycycline capsules (be sure to ask for capsules), amoxicillin capsules, 10% liquid Baytril (ask for Enroxil which is generic 10% Baytril really cheap—1000 rat doses for only $40 plus shipping!)

no RX needed last i read here http://ratfanclub.org/resp.html scroll down a bit to see.

LilAngel. I believe that is out of date. The FDA created a law that changed the rules regarding Baytril and chickens which made it extremely hard to come by. There are still places that have it available but they seem few and far between. Some will advertise Baytril and send you Ciprofloaxin which is the human equivalent. Cipro has been said to not be as effective in rats. You can still get the Doxy and Amox off them last I checked.

This seems to be the only site out there that looks like it could be reputable. I haven't ordered off them and can't vouch for them at all but every other site I have seen that carries it (and there are very few) look pretty shady. Buying drugs online can be a toss up and in this case if the rat is already sick it will take longer for them to arrive then to just go to the vet :/

edit: I found the FDA page on Baytril:

No RX. I will have to email jedds and ask about the Baytril, maybe they don't post it on their website since they can get in a lot of trouble for selling it
