Hello guys. I haven't posted here in a while, I've been so ridiculously busy!! Argh!! Well, here's my question. I know this has been asked/posted before, but I can't find it and I'm a little loopy as of late! Haha.

I just found out that I'm most likely pregnant, go for a blood test to confirm this upcoming week. Yay. But I'm nervous about all the rattie kids. I have to do a LOT of upkeep on them as it is, now I'm nervous as to what I should/shouldn't be doing. I have around 35 ratties at the moment, in several cages. How dangerous is it for me to be around their urine/poop once I am further along? I am only about 5 weeks now. I want them to be in clean, healthy conditions, and I want to be safe. I am most likely able to get help with taking care of them from some friends. But I won't be able to get daily help until my boyfriend moves back near me in 2 months or so.

I'm freaking out a little bit right now, haha. I refuse to get rid of my kids, but I want my baby to be safe, I'm going to have enough to worry about managing my diabetes to a T!! Ugh!! Haha. Someone heeelppp!!

This has come up many many times, and ratties are perfectly safe to be around during pregnancy. :) The cat litter box is the one that should'nt be cleaned by a pregnant woman, and even rats can get endoparasites from the cat poop as well.

so as long as i'm keeping them very clean everything should be ok? my boyfriend is absolutely paranoid that i'm going to lose the baby because of the ammonia in their urine if i go near it. i'm trying to tell him differently. are there any resources online or in books that i can show to back this up??

and handling them, should that be ok as long as they aren't covered in pee like they sometimes enjoy being. :p haha. obviously, washing my hands. i've been washing my hands like nobody's business. haha.

Rats will not harm your baby before or after birth.
Urine is sterile, it isn't going to harm your baby either.

Of course, whether a person has rats or not, cleanliness is always important.

i've heard rumours of it causing asthma to either you or your baby whilst your pregnant.. but again, i haven't any evidence of it so its still a rumour.

I dont think you will lose the baby because of the rat pee

Ammonia should only cause a problem if you let the cages get too dirty... regular cleaning is your safest bet.

If you are still concerned you could always wear rubber gloves and face masks while you clean, and I know some people recommend this even if you are not pregnant or do not have a compromised immune system.

ok, yeah. i'm usually pretty strict with the cleaning, so then it shouldn't be a problem. i always wear gloves, but i'll pick up some masks just to be on the safe side. :) thanks for everyone's help. you guys are the best.

CONGRATULATIONS!!! I'm pregnant as well, I'm in my 13th week (which I think means I'm done the first trimester).

I have cleaning the cages, played with my girls the only thing I'm not doing is lifting anything heavy. You should be fine.

Well I haven't been throwing up, but I started at 6 weeks with all day nausea and being tired. I haven't had cravings yet, but I will tell you I'm eating better then I ever have, I used to love chocolate and I don't seem to want it so much anymore, same with fast food. Although I do have an adversion to lasagna I can't stand it right now.

I've been soo exhausted. lol. And nausea on and off. I can't BELIEVE how little energy I have. I had to completely fix my diet. I'm diabetic too, so I had to pretty much cut out any carbs I actually was eating.. I'm not thrilled about that at all. I've been rather grouchy lol. And giving up my diet soda for the most part is making me very pissy, hahaha. All I can drink on a constant basis is water.. grrrr.

Well my pregnant friends have explained to me that you're supposed to feel better in the 2nd trimester and that the 1st and 3rd trimesters are the most tiring. So hopefully the both of you will be feeling a bit better soon. However I'm sure you both already know this. Hope you are both going well.

My nausea has decreased a lot. About 3 or so in the afternoon I start to feel really run down and ill, so I go get some milk and just work through it. Today I was so tired I couldn't do anything so I came home for 20 for lunch and had a nap and that helped a lot. Milk is my best friend right now.

Congratulations to both of you! It is exciting to look forward to some more tiny little Forum members. Both of your kids will know the joy of pets from an early age.

I can well imagine that it must be tiring to care for 35 rats, especially when pregnant. Here's hoping for a healthy pregnancy... may your energy return soon!

Hubby and I are TTC. I have severe endometriosis and PCOS so pregnancy is near impossible for me...I say near, doctors say impossible completely :giggle: At my last surgery, I was told that I would have to get a hysterectomy the last week of May *this year* but I am going to hold out on that and pray pray pray like a crazy person  The first week of June, I will be going in to see a fertility specialist for all the tubal dye tests and such *cringes* Either way, *train of thought leaving on track 2 choo-choooo!!*....sorry for that haha. Congratulations to both of you and hopefully I will be in the "cool preggers club" soon :cheeky:
