Hi,

My husband and I have just gotten our first rat! She is a female Fancy Rat, we haven't named her yet. We have it narrowed down but we want to get to know her more before we pick one. :] We are very excited and have been doing a lot of reasearch, but still have a few questions. We know she needs a friend; we plan on getting her one as soon as possible. Does her companion need to be the same breed of rat? We have read it needs to be the same gender in some places, is this true? Should we give her time to adjust to her new surroundings first? Any help is apprecatied!

:D

Congratulations!
Lots of pics are encouraged LOL

Your new rat will need to be the same gender, unless you are spaying and neutering them.
There are different colors, patterns, and types of coat and ear placement but there are not different breeds.

get her a friend asap. She will be happier, friendlier and more outgoing with a buddy.
You may want to get another girl from where ever you got her.
If both rats are under 3 months of age you can put them together, otherwise there are established, gradual intro steps you can follow.

Hi! Glad to hear two more ratties will have a loving home!
You have come to the right place for questions - many, many rattie hours are represented on this board...
