Can someone tell me what are some healthy foods high in protein that I can give my 2 month old rats ? Their food is only 15% Portein. Also, how do I know if they are getting enough protein?
Thanks its just in literally every other forum plus stuff I read and videos I saw about rats people say that rats need extra protein (18% or even 20%) until their about 6 months old???Rats are weaned at about 4 weeks. The China study did testing on rats and it showed that rats when weaned require low protein for optimum health. So even at 15% that could be high for rats.
We also need to remember, with their short lifespan, rats at 2 months are actually teenagers. They are full grown adults at 6 to 7 months.

Jorats, who is very concerned re diet and nutrition, has written that she feeds her babies regular rat blocks (15% or 14% protein) and that babies do not need extra high protein foods.
For example: treats like pumpkin seeds are high in protein and so is real oatmeal (they like it cooked)
You can supplement with organic soy infant formula thickened with baby cereal if you think it is necessary.
Some people will suggest eggs etc but those foods are unhealthy

Thank you !Hiya!
To give you a general idea, when my ratties were tiny lil babies I would usually go for oatmeal with soy and chia seeds, in general quite a bit of soya products like low fat yoghurt because of all the natural plant protein, baby food, a little bit of egg (but not too much! Maybe 1/3 between 2 ratties,) chickpeas, banana and cooked tofu.
Oh I see. I stopped feeding them extra protein and I do feed them veggies everyday. Animal protein being unhealthy for them feels a little weird to me since they are omnivores?I know
There is a great deal of wrong and outdated information out there
People on other sites recommend feeding rats all sorts of unhealthy things ...... which feed cancer, etc
Rats need very low protein (China study), unfortunately the rat blocks don't come in lower protein levels then 14%, but feeding lots of healthy food such as a variety of daily vegs will lower their daily protein intake.
The China study found that rats do best on plant protein. Animal protein is unhealthy for them.
