We have had the girls just under a month. I had concerns about their bellies being a little bloated like they were pregnant. There is no way the other owner had them for a month previously. I have been feeling them up.
Maisey I wonder if she has a hernia behind where he umbilical cord would of connected. Happy I have felt a lump on her side and in her belly but it turns out it is her spleen enlarged... Goldie just died from this. I am so devastated over this that the tears are ripping me apart.

Maisey can go in for a spay and he will open her up further to see what is wrong. He is uncomfortable doing this on Happy due to her spleen being so enlarged.

I just dont know what to do or think right now. She is such a sweet little girl and was going to go home to Hippo's momma but now I cant let her go.

4 nights ago I seriously thought I was saying goodbye to Happy. She was lethargic, refusing food, and barely moving. Her breathing was fast and her ears were almost white.

My vet refused surgery on her because of how large her spleen is. Something he never does. He said the only times he has seen this is in ferrets and generally it is deadly and usually a form of cancer.

Granted infection can cause this to happen but I think in our little friends Cancer is generally the culprit. I started her on Metacam and baytril and doxy both just because that was all I could do. The next morning I was thinking I would find that she had passed but instead I found her drinking water. I was every bit ready to put her to sleep that afternoon after work. She ended up being very winded still but was eating, so we held on.

The next day she gradually started looking better not as puffy and eating a little bit more. Yesterday and today she has been just zipping around the cage like no other. Today she looks amazing. I can still feel her spleen but her actions are 1000 times better than 4 days ago.

I dont know if this is something we can fix but I have hope now.

Gloria is our pt girl who we started treating with bromo and dex and now with just bromo. We started her treatment the end of April and she is still going strong. I have two very dear miracle girls in that group and One happy man-rat cooper who lived alone for most of his 2 years due to attitude.

keep them both in your thoughts. I want her to have a good chance at life.

Is she on any meds? I had a rat with an enlarged spleen, my vet told me it might be some kind of infection so we put him on Baytril and two weeks later he was back to normal and so was his spleen.

Yes baytril and doxy and had some metacam for a few days. She is constipated. I can feel it in her bum areas. I managed to get a small piece out and it is very hard and not like normal rat poo but more grainy looking. Yes I cut it apart and inspected it. I gave her pumpkin tonight and will give her more tomorrow.

I can say her belly is lump free. Her sister had some funny spots in her belly so I am going to have her spayed and explored on monday. I will take Happy with Maisey so they can check her over again :) I am in shocked I didnt lose her over this but she is a fighter and she is so much better now.
