Dozer is continuing to do better....His activity level has increased.....he seems much more interested in things but his appetite is not great. I am syringing and offering him goodies but he doesn't seem to want to eat much and he is still losing weight.

I wanted to mention... My Jorge had started to sound rough and acted differently. I got him on Baytril and at first he started to do better but three weeks into his treatment he regressed. He started to be more sleepy, low energy, not eating. I feared it might be his heart... but I had a feeling... so I switched him from Baytril to Zithromax. He's a different rat! He's active, hungry and happy again, just like his old self. The change in him was instant...within 24 hours. Obviously, Baytril does not agree with his system and I was making him worse than better.
I just wanted to bring that up, that some rats do have bad reactions to our tried and true meds.

Dozer is still doing the same....more energy, moving around the cage. eager to come and see me and get lots of loving.....he is still on enalapril..I have increased it a bit ...I changed his anitibotic from Baytril to Amoxil. His breathing is not noisy at all but sometimes after moving around a lot seems heavy like he is winded. But my main concern is his appetite.....still not good at all. He picks at everything I offer him......sometimes will drink ensure from a syringe, sometime not......He is thin....but has not lost anymore weight this week.
Any suggestions......maybe go back on the lasix? Add something different???

I'll ask around and see if there's anything beyond a steroid that improves appetite.

Is he happy hun? Albeit slow and thin and still laboured breathing? Are his eyes happier than before?

He seems very happy.....not at all irritable.....loves to be held. Runs right to me as soon as I go near the cage.......wants his head rubbed. He is back to his old self that way......I wouldn't really have any concerns at all if could get him to eat more...... have tried everything.....and nothing seems to appeal to him. He takes tiny bits of things......

I could try a bit of pred???Or would that be to risky?

Lemme look into it, but I often gave dex with the heart meds to help with the breathing...it made them a lot more comfortable and usually spurred that appetite too.

They say to be careful I am pretty sure but I don't believe its contraindicated.

If he doesn't have much of an appitite it may be that his breathing is interfering with eating.
If he sounds conjested, then he needs to be on lasix. You need to assess that daily.
I always put rats with heart problems on atenolol and check to see if their heats are enlarged. If so then they also need to be on digoxin.

Dex can only be given for 5 days but can help a grat deal depending upon the circumstances.
Pred can help with appitite and also reduce any inflamation he may have. It can be used long term if needed.

Hope Dozer is soon feeling better.

I'm sorry about your boy. It's so hard to see them like this. :hugs:

I do have to put in my two cents about using Steroids with a heart issue though. Not a good combo at all. Steroids can really speed up the heart and also raise their blood pressure (I know from personal human experience too). This of course can be really hard on a rattie that is already compromised, and can also weaken their immune system for fighting off infection. Although is humans, steroids can boost your appetite and cause weight gain (again, I have experience with that too :cry3: ), I've only seen the opposite in rats. I don't know why and my vet was baffled too...but every rat I've ever had on steroids, lost weight and wouldn't eat as much.

Our Stella has had heart issues since she was 4 months old. At 26 months now, she's nearing the end, but not without one heck of a long fight. She's been on Baytril, lasix, enalapril and nebulizer treatments almost her entire life. She did well up until the last month. She's now dropping weight fast, and we can't get her to eat much of anything, that's not just soft and mushy (A/D, babyfood, babyrice cereal and Ensure make a nice soupy mix that Stella loves) and takes little effort to eat.

We feared that Stella was going to leave us last week, and thought we ran out of options. But my vet suggested we try Zithromax. We had not used it at all in my 9 years with rats (no one ever got to that point)...but we tried it on Stella. I'm not saying it's helped her rally and she's doing cartwheels....but I can say I don't think she's going to leave us this week. :*) She has started to eat a little more, and isn't as "noisey" as she's been. I think the Zithro is helping though.

The Zithro is a hail mary pass for us...and I hope it keeps Stella feeling ok for a while longer.

Sorry for my own story, but hoping it might offer some helpful info.
