The Travelin' Rat's December 2013 Rescue of the Month is the Pittsburgh Rat Lovers Club and Rescue from Pittsburgh, PA!
www.pittsburgratloversclub.org

While applying for our 501(c)(3), we were informed that we could not donate to rescues that were not already 501(c)(3) approved. So we are trying something new to help rescues that badly need funds but have not applied for 501(c)(3) status- we are helping them set up fundraisers for themselves and promoting them during their chosen month. During this month, any proceeds that are raised through The Travelin' Rat's online sales will go to The Travelin' Rat.

Pittsburgh Rat Lovers Club:

The Pittsburgh Rat Lovers Club and Rescue was founded in 2004 by Lindsay and Joe Pulman with the help of three other rat fanciers to create a forum where rat owners could learn, get help and support, and have fun enjoying their pet rats. It has grown from the original five founders to 210 members currently.

We help advise owners and veterinarians all over the world on rat care, with the help of our club veterinarians and our own collective rat experience.

PRLC helps facilitate the rescue & rehoming of rats, and those rats that cannot be adopted are given loving homes for life through the efforts of our wonderful foster parents.

We also keep a privately run rat shelter which currently has 200 rescue rats that for various reason have never been able to be adopted out. These rats are rescued from private owners, other animal shelters, & other emergency rescue situations. Many have behavioral problems, special needs, or are elderly. PRLC provides medical care, food, and shelter to all of these wonderful little animals for life.

These rescue rats came to us from Pittsburgh and all of the surrounding areas in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, and Maryland. We are the biggest rat rescue in this part of the country. Many of our rescue rats have traveled hundreds of miles and many hours being driven to us. For many of these rats this was their last hope of living out the rest of their lives happily and comfortably..

Club membership is free for the whole family. Just go to our website www.pittsburgratloversclub.org and follow the link for membership.

At our shelter alone our rescue ratties eat about 36 boxes of Cheerio type cereal in 10 days' time. This is additional to other foods such as oats, puffed rice cereals, dry noodles, Harlan, and Regal Rat Chow. A 40 pound sack of Harlan in our shelter can sometimes be used up in one weeks' time. We pay $1.69 for one just one box of cereal. Multiply this by 36 every 10 days then factor all the other food costs and medical expenses and supplies for the needs of all these rats and you will see just how badly we are in need of some help and fundings to care for this many animals.
