Chewing their cage

I found a huge hole on both sides of the bottom of the cage. Top cage is bars etc, bottom is the black base the bars sit on. The black base has been chewed lots and it's only days before they get out. Is there a way to stall them or buy some time?

They're a handful bunch and my rats before this were nothing like this they're a hassle more than fun. I feel awful but I'm fed up with them

Perhaps something like wire netting that you can staple or screw to secure it to the plastic? Thing sheet metal would also be flexible enough to conform to any curved sides and can be secured with screws and nuts.
