Black Eyes

Wayne and I were looking at Hazel the other night and we noticed that she seems to have dark brown eyes not black. We looked at Olivia (our other black eyed) and noticed the same thing. So is it possible that rats eyes are not fully black or could they be brown as well.

What colour are your rats? They usually have a genetic eye colour.

I can't see it as much in Olivia she's a black self (she's rusting). Hazel is a hooded Agouti so that's probably why her eyes aren't black.

I've noticed that too in a few of mine. In some pics it's really noticeable.

"Black eyed" rats are rarely truly black-eyed. Usually it is a dark brown, which can be seen in the right light. I actually have pictures of some of my rats where you can clearly see the brown iris.

i only tend to notice in pictures that they're actually brown
