    IS MY RAT BLIND?

She's such a cutie. that looks like a cataract in the eye. I can't say for sure, but a vet would be better able to diagnose it if you took her in for a check-up. In humans they can remove cataracts using surgery, but I imagine it may be a very costly procedure for rats - if it's done at all...

    hair "loss"

I don't know what you are really dealing with, but if it's mites, I would personally not use toxic pesticide poison (which is what revolution really is) in any dose, on my ratties - but that's just me. I've had a mite issue with five rescue ratties that came from a really bad situation, and...

    QUICK !!! HOT !!! RATS !!!

I placed a small fan a few feet away from the cage, but it was not angled directly at the cage. It still gave them some air-flow which kept them cool during hot summer days. I also would give them cool baths a couple times a day which they also enjoyed on really hot days. I have large, flat...

    Meet my poor mutt, Oliver

Oliver is adorable :) I'm always happy to hear when ratties are given the chance to experience happiness, proper care, and love, and it looks like this is what you have given Oliver in his life now. Thank you for your kind heart and giving these lovely little animals a chance at a happy life.

Will this carrier be big enough for 2 adult female rats?

This one is another good option as well.. CARRIER It's big enough for 2 or 3, easy to clean, and chew-proof. I also like it because you can see your babies from the top, and always have a easy way to observe them inside.

Theoretical Question to end a Debate: Could wild rats escape a critter nation?

I wholeheartedly agree. It's very unfortunate what has happened to snakes. They have been exploited and turned into a commodity for profit. A lot of people who like snakes and want them as "pets" don't even seem to realize that snakes are wild animals and keeping them forcibly captive is...

I think Ive been under dosing the doxy

Just be extra extra cautious with doxy. I've heard about cases of rats being blinded as a side-effect. I know someone who this has happened to personally. It may just be in very rare cases with extra sensitive rats, but keep it in mind, and always air on the side of caution.

Theoretical Question to end a Debate: Could wild rats escape a critter nation?

Do you intend to keep wild rats as pets? Wild rats are far more emotionally and mentally content spending their lives in their natural habitat, as no wild animal enjoys being kept forcibly captive. (Of course rescue and rehabilitation cases are different, as they are not kept for our...

    Study shows rats have EMPATHY

Helping your fellow rat: Rodents show empathy-driven behavior Rats free trapped companions, even when given choice of chocolate instead By Robert Mitchum December 8, 2011 The first evidence of empathy-driven helping behavior in rodents has been observed in laboratory rats that repeatedly...

    Depression issues?

It sounds like both your rats had some health (perhaps respiratory) issues going on even prior to Gizmo passing. Respiratory problems in rats can start out extremely subtle, without hardly any notice by the owner, before the symptoms get more pronounced. Maybe Moggy took a turn for the worse...

    Study shows rats have imagination

Pavlov’s Rat: Scientists Demonstrate That Rats Have Imaginations Experiments show that rats can picture something they’ve grown used to, even when it isn’t there. Mar 29 2015 Imaginative rats are a popular trope of fiction, from Pixar's culinary dreamer Remy to the wannabe dictator Brain from...

    Liquid antibiotics

So the Baytril I ordered finally came in. If I had known about the 10% injectable liquid from ladygouldianfinch I may had opted out to get that one instead, but I had made the purchase before fumblesquid's post about it. The one I purchased is in powder form (2.5 grams of Enrofloxacin for...

    Liquid antibiotics

Yes, all the feedback is helpful. Fumblesquid, the injectable form of Baytril which you gave the link to here... is this essentially the same as the link that I provided here? I wonder what makes the injectable form have such a longer shelf life, compared to the suspension. Jorats, you...

Hamilton - Upper Ottawa Animal Hospital

Last year I had an emergency with one of my girls, Dora, and I rushed to Gagemount Animal Hospital on Mohawk (as it had been recommended here), but instead the vet at Gagemount directed me down the street, to Dr. Andreja Kojic, at Upper Ottawa Animal Hospital. I was told Dr. Kojic was more...

Rat keeps scratching and re-opening a wound (Picture)

I've used 3% dilution on my rats with no problems at all, and in fact they don't even notice it. You are probably thinking of 10% or greater. It helps with healing because it destroys pathogenic bacteria topically, which eases the burden on the immune system and allows it to repair tissue...

Rat keeps scratching and re-opening a wound (Picture)

Perhaps it might be a good idea to dab some 3% hydrogen peroxide on the wounds to keep them disinfected and prevent any potential infections. It absorbs and dissipates quickly, so there won't be a chance of the rattie to lick/smear it off like with an ointment. You may need to re-apply it...
