Peggy, when he is out and about he doesn't look blind. But...if you try to pet him, you can definitely tell then he has no idea that you're there. When he is in his cage and you put your hand in there, he has no idea. And...the weirdest thing happened. I gave him a banana slice, and he started to eat it and went to grab it, and I guess because it was sticky he instantly dropped it and just looked around like 'omg what is this, why is it like this' and held his hands up in the air and didn't want to touch anything else. Trust me...he is definitely blind.

I would try and engage his other senses. Definitely let him know each time before you pet him. Maybe say his name or the same phrase every time before you touch him. Then he will come to associate that phrase with you touching him. Maybe have one word for petting him, and a different word for you picking him up. That way he will know what you are planning on doing. Always talk to him so he knows you are near. He can smell and hear you, but still may not be paying attention and would be surprised if you touched him without warning. As far as the banana goes, some rats don't like sticky, squishy stuff on their paws. But if he likes the flavour, he'll get over it! :)
