Hi!,

I am having a hard time finding a good food for my rats..I bought the Oxbow adult rat food and they dont it like too much. So It would be great if you guys could tell me what you feed your ratties??? And do they love it? What do you think about the Suebee's rat diet?

Thanks!

My guys adore the new Oxbow formula... when I switched over from Harlan, they would only eat the HT if there was no more Oxbow.

The recommended diet for rats is:
80% a good quality lab block. The 3 recommended blocks are Oxbow Regal Rat, Harlan Tech 2014 (in Canada see http://www.chinchilla.ca/), and Living World Extrusion hamsters blocks.
20% daily vegs (fresh or frozen/thawed), and occassional healthy treats such as a piece of fruit, cooked oatmeal, cheerio, etc

My rats also love the new Oxbow Regal Rat food ... as well as the other two recommended blocks.

Suebees diet isn't a well balanced healthy diet for rats ...

My girls are on a strict diet of Harlan Teklad 2014, which they LOVE LOVE LOVE! And it's one of the best blocks out there, if not THE best :] I had a hard time finding it at first, none of the stores around here sell it, and I really had to hunt it down online, but this website is where I order mine from, and they're awesome :D Plus, they can ship in a flat rate box, so you don't have to worry about shipping or anything, one full down payment and you're gold!

I personally disagree Living World Extrusion Hamster Blocks are not appropriate for rats. I've read a lot about nutrition and from what I can see there are two basic options.

1)Lab block (Oxbow or Harlan 2018, 2016, 2014 depending what age your rats are) with fruit a few times a week and daily vegetables

2) A biologist that has thoroughly studied rat nutrition recommends something similar to a salad as their diet. Read more about it here at the bottom of the page http://www.goosemoose.com/rfc/index.php ... 4097247.25

The rat block is discouraged by some health food fanatics who claim that the processing and some of the ingredients or preservatives are harmful but how about all the nitrates and nitrites found in vegetables and grains. Shouldn't we be worried about those? There is no 100% safe food.

I feed my little guys Oxbow and they love it! They gobble it up like treats. I'm also going to start feeding them a homemade supplement made by The Rat Whisper.

I also like to feed them veggies and fruits daily. Things like apples, bananas, blueberries, carrots, broccoli, peas, cucumbers...

They also enjoy eating yogurt or baby food about 3 times a week. They go crazy over it!
