Saw this cage for sale on the internet.
It is a homemade cage with cloroplast floors.

Probably good for large boys or play climber in play area.

Not quite sure how the doors were attached but that wouldn't be too hard ...

I've used the storage cubes to make a kitten cage while I was fostering. I made it large enough that it could fit their litter box, food, water, toys, and crate for their bed. It worked wonderful!

The standard cubes though have very large spacing, so it would only work with large male rats. I know it is possible to find smaller spaced cubes, but I've yet to see them. I still like the look of the cage with the colourful levels, looks nice!

I'll try to see if I can find where I saw it, but you could make one.
The bar spacing, however would be much too large for anything but large boys if you used it as a cage ... but something like that would make a fun addition to a rattie play area

I tried making a cage out of those... my males heads would come right out of it. I was scared they could get stuck that way.

You can make C & C cages out of a mesh grid as well. I have seen them around and I got mine ages ago from Linens and More...

unglued made one for her babies once. :) I could never figure out how to put them together properly.

Just curious... what's an FN cage and where can you get one? I'm still a bit new to rats, I had a rat in the past that I adopted and he lived about 2 years after I got him (not sure how old he was) but he started having trouble breathing and he had a heart attack at the vets office and died on the table. His cage was a two level all wire cage. At that time I didn't know about bumble foot. :(

This thread caught my eye since I did create one of the mesh cages when I got Wicket and Seagram. I needed a bigger cage than the one I had. It is certainly nothing special in comparison with the sexy FN or Martin's cages, but it serves us quite nicely. It's about 20x20x40 (though the base is a bit narrower -- it's an old guinea pig cage base).

Got the mesh cubes at Linens 'n Things. Nice thing is that the "doors" are huge and the top serves as a great extra level. The mesh is somewhat heavy, so I made the inside shelf, and part of the top out of other things. The top actually flips almost completely open as well to make cleaning easier. Yey for zip ties...

A few pics for reference:
