hi looking for the current recommendations for dosage and length of treatment with these meds for a URI

azithomycin in 40mg/ml concentration- how much per Kg or lb should a rat get and for how long?

amoxicillin 33mg/ml concentration, what is the dosage per Kg or lb

and baytril

I don't have a sick rat, but one of the rats I'll be taking care of the end of next month is sick and her owner has asked about the medications. I've invited her to come and post here but I don't think she's joined yet.

math/numbers literally make my eyes cross, so I'm throwing this out there for all you math and medication pros

thanks!

Really I should get all this info into a document for myself, in case my guys ever need it.
my vet tends to under dose and I need to be armed in advance with the proper amnts so I don't get sent home with too little.

Azithromycin
4 mg/lb to 8 mg/lb BID first 14 days then SID for additional 14 days if needed. 4
Safe for use in pregnant does and rats under 4 months. See Raisin’ Rats Rattery, http://rathelp.org/raisinrats/medicalinfo.html; M.Ruud, Breeder, RMCA Member
or

15 mg/kg to 30 mg/kg, PO, q24hrs 34

Dosing at 8mg/lb they would get .20ml twice a day per POUND.

Amoxicillin
10 mg/lb , PO , BID 4
Given over 10 to 14 days.
10 mg/lb to 50 mg/lb , PO , BID 3

I dose at 15mg/lb BID. Dosage per POUND with that mg/ml would be .45ml twice a day, again, per pound. If the rat weighs more or less they would get more or less.

Baytril
*Note: If choosing to use Baytril 10%, keep in mind it has a concentration of 100 mg per 1 mL. Also, because the 10% concentration can be so caustic to tissue it must be diluted for all routes.
5 mg/kg to 10 mg/kg , PO , IM , q12hr 1 26 27 28; anywhere from 5 to 30 days (injectable form may be given orally). May be combined with doxycycline for treatment of mycoplasma. 26 27
or
5 mg/kg to 20 mg/kg , PO , SQ , q24hr 26 27
or
5 mg/lb, PO, BID (as recommended on RMCA Drug Chart) 4
or
Baytril 2.27% =.20 mL/lb 14 to 30 days (as recommended on RMCA Drug Chart) 4
or
2.5 mg/kg to 10 mg/kg , PO , q12hr 2

Per Rat Health Care by Debbie Ducommun:”Best reserved for older animals and more severe infection”, Baytril 10mg/lb , PO or SQ , BID 3

I dose at 10mg/lb

Is that what you were looking for?

Azithromycin 10 mg/Ib to 15 mg/Ib (0.25 ml/Ib to 0.38 mg/Ib at the strength you mentioned) twice a day for at least 6 weeks if helping
It works well if given with baytril - dosages for baytril seem to vary from 5 mg/Ib to 10 mg/Ib, given twice a day for at least 4 to 6 weeks

I have a great deal of experience with this combo, (zithro at 10 mg/Ib + baytril at 10mg/Ib,) twice a day for at least 6 weeks

I use clavamox not amoxicillin
