My gang doesn't seem to like using their litter boxes, so after looking through all of the comments on the FN photo thread, I thought I'd try what Jack Sparrow did, and make coroplast liners for my dirty ratties.

I chose green, because it's my fav color. These are two 48" by 98" sheets.

I took the dimensions of the FN and added 8" to each measurement, because I wanted 4" sides/walls. The FN measurements are 34" X 23", so I cut the coroplast into 3 sheets of 42" X 31".

Then I measured 4" from each side, drew the 4" line markers, and scored one side of the coroplast with a utility knife.
Note: I did make the back wall about 4 1/2" tall, so that the box fits withing the door jam area.
I cut all the way through one corner (which you can see in the photo) to make a box edge. Then I taped them together. Maybe I'll try to find some green tape :)

Here are all three FN level liners/floors completed. The cutting isn't the prettiest, but it'll work.

And a photo of Maisy while I was installing the floor. She wasn't too concerned as you can see.

Can't wait to see how well this works.
I'll be putting the third level of my FN together this weekend, and photos of that will come then.

you did a great job and you will love it , i did the same for Jack on this forum and she is very happy with it. Now if you find that they still pee too much on the top shelve you can do a smaller box for up there .

Wow. I would LOVE to try this! I miss the absorbency of the cat litter I used. How long will those boxes last before replacing them?

Aww, what a sweet little girl!

Thats a great idea, I think I will be doing the same since my girls refuse to use their litter box.

i might have to do this, my ratties were great with litter training in the beginning, but they've become sloppy recently, only use them about half the time, for 11 rats, that's quite a bit.

Around 5 pounds of rat poop a month! :holysheep:

Looks great! I'd love to do that... Our boys chew their pans. We thought about doing this when we were building our C&C cages for our guinea pigs. But my concern was that I've heard rats chew through corplast like nothing. Have you (or anyone else) experienced this?

I've added some more photos. I have 3 levels now, and these liners really help things stay neat and tidy.

I haven't found my ratties chewing it at all (I have it as a base in a play house), but I have no doubt that they could -- really easily, if they wanted to. They do tend to chew cardboard, apple sticks, etc. but they aren't rabid chewers.

meghan -- thanks for the link; I also found various sizes of it at Home Depot, in case that's helpful to anyone.
