Chosing an air purifier?

My fiance has had a really rough year for allergies, to the point where pet dander, dust and almost anything else will make him react and get all wheezy. We have noticed that he has started to react even worse to the rats now whenever he picks them up. He's usually fine with being in the same room as them, but the moment he starts to pick them up and pet them, he starts to almost immediately react to them.

My question here is I was wondering does anyone here use air purifiers in their home? I've been looking on amazon for a small table top one to put in the same room as the rats, since we have them with us in our living room - which will hopefully help with the allergies!
I'm looking for one that is not ultrasonic, nor does it give off ozone.. Any suggestions?
