Can rats eat hay?

Hi I brought my rats to the vet for a check up and the vet told me I should be giving my rats hay.. I've never heard of this. Can rats have hay?

I mean you can give it to them but they aren't going to eat it more than a nibble. Rats are not herbivores that need long fiber to digest. Good info for a rabbit or GP, not for a rat. I'd see if there are more knowledgeable rat vets around.
