I am new to the Rat owner community, I have a baby rat about 8 and a half weeks old. When i got home yesterday and got him out his back foot was very swollen and purple and he will not use it at all. I do not know his exact weight he is the first rat i have ever owned. Also he does not seem to be to fond of the critter food the pet store recommended, what sorts of things can i feed him snack wise that he may like.

p.s any tips or suggestions on being a new rat owner would greatly be appriciated

everytime i try to post pics it says their to large, and he is alone
thank you for the links very helpful

You need to be very careful with swelling as it can be dangerous.
You need something for pain that will also reduce the swelling.

Metacam, from a vet, will help with pain and swelling.

I believe that this post by Lilspaz68 would also apply to your situation:

You need pain relief and an anti-inflammatory ........ You can pick up infant liquid ibuprofen (rats really like grape-flavoured Advil) and that should help reduce any swelling and help with discomfort.

Regardless of the medication you decide to give the baby, you will need to know his weight.
You need a digital scale that measures accurately in grams. (postal scales work well)
Once you know his weight, people can help you to figure out the correct dosage.

hope this info helps
