    Need medication advice for URI

If the Baytril didn't do anything it might be because an outside source is causing the sneezing. Is their bedding dusty or mildewed? Do you have any mold in the room they are in? Did you recently get a new pet? The vet will probably recommend better options for antibiotics if it is a URI.

    nose bump

It does look very much like an abscess but how old is your rat? Some of the older ones get weird bumps and fat bubbles that are totally benign. However if it is making it hard for your rat to eat or breath then definitely bring him in to the vet. Is the gunk coming from the bump or is it just...

    My first boys, tips?

I have always gotten girls before but I decided I wanted a mellower pair and I was tired of dealing with mammary tumors. Any tips on diet, behavior, health, etc? I am under the impression boys are supposed to be less active and more lap rats. I assume because of this they are more likely to be...

My new boys, not sure what to name them, ideas?

I found two baby boys from Bleu Royale Rattery, anyone know them? Anyways one is a bleu rex and one is a siamese, they are brothers. Their pictures are below, any ideas for names?

    Dried figs?

If they are just dried figs a tiny piece would be okay but if they have a lot of sugar do not give them to your rats! Check the package for how much sugar is in them. Also figs are notorious for helping move your bowels so if you give them too much fig they might get diarrhea.

    URGENT: calling all rat lovers.

Oh my gods! If anyone offered to operate on my babies in a hotel room and the people who are supposed to prevent animal cruelty couldn't do anything I would scream! *shudder* That is just horrifying, no meds, no training and hotel rooms are seriously disgusting, a million people have been in...

    Goodbye Licorice

I posted several months ago about the death of my baby Luna. Now her sister has gone beyond the veil too. She was sweet, curious, fierce, loving, and beautiful. She has gone now to join her sister in the Summerlands, buried in the same plot, wrapped in the same cloth and bathed in the same...

    Oddball rat thread ..

One of my girls(marshmallow/fluffer) used to sleep with her head under her sister's butt! The same girl also refused to use the regular entrance to her hidey-hole and instead had a permanent tunnel dug under the side and she would squeeze through that every single time. The other girl(peanut...

    Rat clothes

The most I've ever done is bandannas and bows, these are adorable! I feel like my rats would just chew them up though, they chew everything. :D

Help! Rat had a difficult labor and possibly in a shocked state!

If you can get a vet on the phone and describe your situation they might have some pointers that could help too. If you have an eye-dropper you can try to give the rat some water or milk, she really needs to re-hydrate. One of the best foods for pregnant and nursing rats is hard boiled egg yolks...

Help! Rat had a difficult labor and possibly in a shocked state!

Definitely remove the dead babies. Is she still bleeding from the vagina? Can you put your fingers on her chest and check her heart rate? Is it slow? Are there any babies left alive? Is her abdomen rigid? Find your nearest vet. You said you live in the country? How far away is the nearest vet...

    Possible siezure

X-rays don't help diagnose neurological problems you would need an MRI which I don't recommend since they are expensive. Plus it is unlikely you will find a vet's office with that kind of equipment for small animals and you have to sedate your rat to get them to hold still for the MRI. I would...

2 year old rat hurt, need advice.

See if you can get antibiotic ointment for pets or children so if she licks it off it doesn't hurt her tummy. Check her feet every day and pluck off any bedding stuck to the sores, wash them in cold water and re-apply the antibiotic. Ask your vet if losing weight would help lighten the load on...

    Inbred oops litter. Silver babies?

Absolutely adorable! This marking and color combination is called a bare backed, blue pearl. Blue pearl is actually a very rare and prized color. If your baby didn't have deformed front paws I would say enter her in a hobby competition. In fact if you feel like it do it anyway! It might be fun...

My rat has an open wound.

One or the other of them might try to lick the ointment off so see if can find antibiotic ointment for children or pets that won't be dangerous if ingested. Also make sure to clean it well first and if possible snip the hair out of the way so it doesn't get stuck in the scabs.

not getting free roam time everyday

I was feeling bad about doing this too but when I did some research I found out that rats actually sleep about 16 hours a day! So I just let them out when they're awake.

Undersocialized "nippy" intact male rat adoption

My girl was a biter when I first got her but as long as I don't feed her through the bars and don't stick my fingers into her hidey-hole she doesn't bite my anymore. I've never had a male rat, maybe next time around?

Hairless who loves to chew fabric

My baby loves chewing fabric too. I don't give her hammocks anymore because she simply shredded them so now I get big bleached out or hole-filled towels from the thrift store, wash them, and cut them up into foot wide squares. I give her a square every couple of days and take out the old one to...

Elderly rat has lost 20% of her body weight in the past month

Another healthy fat alternative that could help get her weight up is hard-boiled eggs. They are great for pregnant and nursing rats so maybe good for old girls too? I would suggest making mush from the blocks with warm milk and see if she likes that better than cold water. You would only be able...
