Did he actually weigh her both times? Can you find out her actual weight then and now?

He weighed her the first time - one ounce.

He said she looked twice the size the second time, but didn't adjust the meds....

Lily is doing that thing where she looks like she's choking again and goes to the top of the cage and looks upward like she cannot breathe. :(

Can anyone tell me what the heck I'm supposed to do here? I'm a good rattie mom and I took her to the vet, went through three different meds, and tons of bills now and she's STILL suffering....

WHAT IS GOING ON!??! Why wouldn't the antibiotics worked?

PLEASE ADVISE!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!! :( :( :(

Poor sweet Lily... her lungs are probably not strong enough. Sometimes antibiotics don't help or it hasn't been long enough or you need different ones. It's so hard to see them this way especially when they are so young.
You are a good rattie mom, it's not your fault, some rats are not strong, especially those from pet stores or taken away from their mom too young. :(

I'm a newbie here, BUT i've had a TON of animals, and if there's ONE thing i've learned fromm all of them, it's no matter how much they may look to be the same size, ALWAYS get your vet to weigh your pet...

We had a chameleon, and our aweful vet before the one we have now, said the same thing, he looked to be about the same size, so we'll just replace the meds, or keep it the same...
When he was so sick, and knocking on deaths door, after 3 months of fighting coccidia, we took him to a new vet, within the month his infestation was gone!
and it was because she weighed him no matter if he 'looked' the same or not...

and don't doubt yourself ever, you know you are doing the best that you can do, and that's the main thing, you love her tons, you take her to the vet when she needs to go, and your her mum...
head up girl, you're doing great!!!

:hugs:

you could try her on baytril + azithromycin.
But the dossage needs to be based on her weight and you will need a perscription for the drug store.
If she has fluid in her lungs, lasix may help, just make sure she doesn't get dehydrated.

Lily is FINALLY starting to seem like she's getting better!!

She's a goofy little baby!! Loves to play and HARDLY sneezes now.

So in the end (hopefully the end of troubles) it took two weeks of amoxi, two weeks of baytril doxy combo, and a week of doxy alone!!! It sucks that I had to give such a little young rat so much meds, but she was clearly weened WAY too young.

Thank you all so so much for all your help!!! You guys rock!!!

:hugs:

Finallly!! :cheeky:

What was the last course of meds? Baytril/Doxy? Poor baby just didn't get the right meds until the end...sooo glad she's feelign better...poorly babies make me sad. Spree has a bit of something going on, and has been on baytril and I think is starting to feel better, but you worry so... :wink2:

THANK YOU ALL!!!

You are all so wonderful and knowledgeable!! I am PSYCHED that I found this site. It's so amazing!!

Here's an updated pic of Lily, a little bigger now. :) (sorry it's blurry, she was caught in a rare goofy mood, but it was night and not good camera time :p)

And yes, she's biting the bars because she ALWAYS wants to be held!! I think all that nursing her back to health time together made her very attached to mama.

Thanks again guys!! :hugs:

Yep, the doxy and baytril did the job in the end. I'm keeping her on doxy for another week past recommendation though, because I feel that it would be best, given all your guys' advice :D
