Okay, so at first I was going to make a playpen out of cardboard...but my dad suggested that we go to the hardware store and make a playpen out of wood with hinges because he didn't want the cardboard to be too flimsy. Will my rats be able to climb a wooden playpen? And how tall should the playpen be?

They can jump 2.5 feet high so it needs to be taller then that.
If you are making a large play area that you will sit in with the rats, I suggest you use over lapping coroplast sheets attached using zip ties or stick on Velcro - you can use duct tape to cover the holes in the side to prevent dirt etc from getting into it, it is lightweight and will not absorb urine like wood will.
If you are making a playpen where they will play unsupervised, please buy a large martins powder coated playpen as it is amazing. martinscages.com
