There is a faint smell in my room from the cage after I clean it still lingers. I have an air purifier that’s helps but is there any way to eliminate with out using any air freshener because I know they are not good for respiratory systems?

What are you using to clean the cage? Vinegar works wonders to help with cleaning and odour. I use a spray bottle with a cup or so of vinegar in it and 3-4 cups of water with a squirt of dish soap in it. Also make sure to clean the sides of the cage and any crevices. Changing the detergent you use to wash your cage liners or adding a bit of vinegar to the wash could also help.

I find that when rats are kept in an enclosed room, there is an odor.
When I had them in the living room, there wasn't am odor so I think that air circulation and air exchangers help.

You can not use air fresheners at all or anything with scent as it will damage lungs and/or cause illness
Things that absorb odor such as baking soda (out of their reach in the room) may help a bit
A window fan in warm weather can help as you can blow out air and bring in fresh air

I use vinegar and water and a spray bottle to clean the cage and ever go as far and cleaning the crevices with a toothbrush. Could I maybe just keep a box of arm and hammer to help but am nervous it won’t be good for the rats

Make sure the rats can not get anywhere near it and remove it from the room when they are out playing.
Since it does not have an odor or fumes, I think it is safe as long as it is kept away from they and away from their cage
