    New fosters

Hi and welcome. Thank you for caring for helpless little creatures. Some shelves, some hammocks, some hideaways and a lot of toys. Maybe a litter box or two and tubes that are large enough for them so they won't stuck in them. At least two sources of water and a food bowl. It's important that...

Help! New rattie with a really swollen face...

Apparently it could be a number of reasons. You should take her to the vet to be sure what is it. http://allourpaws.com/rodents/rat-swollen-face/

Hi from a new rat owner

I have some interesting news for you. I got three new girls, one older and two about 5-6 weeks old. One of the younger ones is hairless and soooooo cute. I worry all the time that she's cold, so I gave them extra natural soft paper for their nest and I'm keeping the room about 20-22 degrees. I...

    Excited to be here!

Hi and welcome. Both, rats and degus shouldn't live alone. You should get at least two rats, a proper cage and a budget for the vet, bedding, toys and food. All of this can be pretty expensive. I never understood what's the deal with rat's tails and people not liking them, though.

250+ Things Only Rat Owners Will Understand

212 When you have to go to sleep, or at least stretch, because you don't feel your legs, but you won't move, because your rat decided to sleep in your sweater for the first time. So you remain motionless, surfing the internet and posting meaningless posts instead :D

Hi from a new rat owner

I got Sneki not one, but two young girls. I also got Dumbika a bit older girl so they can snuggle when youngsters will play. Right now I got all of the three new ones in a spare cage in a different room. They seem tired from the trip and stress, and they're sleeping. It's so hard to leave those...

Respiratory Infection and Ratty bucket list

I'm trying to see things from my perspective. When I had pneumonia myself, I just wanted to be left alone and feeling better, nothing more. I'm pretty sure your rat feels the same, and taking Egg at unfamiliar places would just scare him and cause more stress. Sweets can also do harm. I believe...

When people keep telling you about gross tails and you have no idea, what they're on about, because all you see is cuteness.

    Too rough play fighting

I'm not sure, but missing fur and scratches... That has to hurt.

    Too rough play fighting

I've put them together in the play area and observing them. Dumbika is following Sneki around while sniffing her rear, Sneki's ignoring her for a while, then out of the sudden Sneki flips Dumbika on her back and targeting her neck and legs. Soon Sneki runs away in a happy gallop. They might...

    Too rough play fighting

I separated my girls yesterday as I felt that my young one, Sneki's play fighting became too rough. She's bolder and bolder every day and yesterday I heard Dumbika, the older girl, is making some short peeps, while Sneki was turning her on the back, bite her neck and ran away. I checked...

Fresh and dried wild berries for treats

Oh, yes that makes sense. I was feeding my degus all sorts of wild plants and they were very healthy, despite some of them were from various bad homes where they have been neglected. I'd bake the roots and dry them anyway. I could cook all those berries into a paste and freeze them. That...

Fresh and dried wild berries for treats

What kind of parasites you have in mind? I eat most of this wild stuff and more, like dandelion salad, bear leek and so on, just like a lot of people around here do, and never heard of any problems. Can rats get some other parasites that humans can't?

Hi from a new rat owner

It became a bit messy. This is the only way I could convince them to stay somewhat still. It didn't last long, though. Sneki Thank you so much for posing, girls Sneki eating, Dumbika scratching The best one of Dumbika. This girl doesn't like the camera at all

    Help needed for new rescue!!

How about sitting by the cage while somehow playing friendly ultrasonic rat sounds? I have no idea, if this is even possible, nor if it could be effective. I'm just thinking aloud and trying to be creative:) Did anyone ever tried it before?

    Help needed for new rescue!!

Sorry, I have no answer for that one. My girl wasn't and isn't cage aggressive. Although she didn't like being held at first, she did tolerate it. For some time I sat by her with my hand in the cage and treats. She was curious enough to come and take the treat. I guess we'll have to wait for...

    Help needed for new rescue!!

I'm not experienced whatsoever, but my baby girl Sneki was also afraid at first. I get her to completely trust me by becoming her safe spot myself. I wore an old hoodie with "kangaroo pocket", a zip up jacket, half zipped on top and let her in the play area inside the jacket. I sat still...

Fresh and dried wild berries for treats

It'll soon be time when there'll be lots of wild berries in the woods and meadows. I already harvesting those for myself and I was thinking to get some for my rats and dry them for healthy winter treats. I'd appreciate if you check this list of what I can get and tell me if any of those is...

Vilmie Premium food - is it any good

I've read that there are some regulations, although GMO isn't completely ruled out. If there's more than 0,9% GMO in people and animal food, it has to be labelled. I wrote e-mails to the companies that produce rat food. I have a feeling that JR Farm is the only one GMO-free as they grow all the...
