It would be something like this (pretty much the same as the galvanized stuff... but yanno... stainless): http://www.twpinc.com/twpinc/control/ca ... =TWPCAT_12

That is, IF I can get this stuff. I haven't asked him about it yet, Mike brought it up and his brother was out late last night.... It does appear to be more expensive than galvanized to the average consumer, but if I can get it directly from the producer (and through the Brother in Law) it would be considerably cheaper. Again.. this is just an idea I'm throwing around.

Is just painting the galvanized a definate nay-nay? If I used nontoxic tremclad or something? I finally found just the galvanized stuff today (not in an industrial sized roll). The girls really don't seem to be bar chewers, anyway. I just don't want it getting stinky.

I think stainless steel is safe with rats. I did a quick google, didn't find anything other than in certain labs, rats are kept in stainless steel containers so it can't be harmful?
I bet stainless would like nice on the FN and easier to work with?
It may be an idea worth exploring. I'd like to know the cost too.

Looks like it's a negatory... they do a very particular type of screen only (he showed me a sample... not at all useable and the likes of which I've never seen).

So... again... is painting the galvanized an option? 'Cause it looks like if I really want powder coated I'll have to order it online.

Oh bummer.

A while back, I did read a couple of times someone painting their cage. If you can get your hands on non toxic paint and also don't forget to leave it out to "cure" for long enough.

Would you be able to order some powder-coated panels from Martins Cages?

I was wondering that myself the other night. Haven't looked into it yet, though. Was also looking at one of the better made crates at work today.. the door looks like welded stainless mesh.

I think I'm going to try and spray paint the galvanized hardware cloth and see what happens. The paint isn't toxic after it has cured.

Melissa, I may be joining you in this endeavour. tonight one of my young Berk girls, who is still very small and whom I suspected of being able to get out of the FN, finally did come out! She had never done it before, but she was curious to see what I was feeding the older girls.

I live in terror of her escaping into the rest of the house or getting her toes severed by Edith and Corrie when I'm at work unable to intervene.

No problem... I just have to buy paint now.

WOOOOO I get to go to Walmart that mean, hehehe (the dollar store is in that mall as well, mwahahahaha)!

That's a lot of ebil laughter  How much stuff are you going to buy? :stickpoke: Lol
LOL! I just get excited easily. I love the dollarstore so much and I like going to walmart when I can because my bf HATES the place and I love to drag him there, teehee.

i have one really thin and small girl who would escape from an un-modded ferret nation, i used these metal cooling racks from a dollar store(not dollarama). they're something like like 10"x14" with one bar in the center being 14" and then there are 14 10" bars going the other way. there are 15 spaces all less than an inch wide and 5 inched long. i did it in such a way that it's not too bad looking.

Dollerama has cooling rack that has smaller spaces in between (about 1cm) but thew wires are sig-zaggy ( I made a new word :) ) and look weird to me.
but they can be loads better for babies, and probably more long lasting than galvanized wire.

I will have to check that out today! Thanks for the info.

Unglued, it's so funny 'cause I was pondering that sort of thing last night. Sounds very doable. Cooling racks sound like a great idea.

I picked up 12 to cover the top and bottom... we'll see how it goes.

Hey unglued, can we get pics?

LOL!!

Ya, my pics are all after cleaning day too.

I'm going to need a good covering, I'm having new baby boys join the rat crew and once they settled and reached 2 to 3 months old, they'll be moving into the FN.
Right now, I've got baby boys that are 3.5 months old and they can still stick their heads and neck out real far. :yikes:
