Hadn't thought of dex, but it makes sense. With people, it's common to use inhaled corticosteroid for chronic lung problems. I've heard of using Prednisone plus antibiotics with rats.

jorats, is it a low or high dose of Dex?

I would ask for dex. It seems to do a world of good to my guys with long term respiratory issues. I give it every 4 days or so.

Is that in addtion to the baytril/doxy or by itself. I'm sure my vet will know I am very happy with this place. They even kiss my ratties.... She loves Popper has a thing for PEW's  I would just rather not sound like an idiot going in there.. :emb:

GMC did not see the vet today, but he is sounding almost completely clear and has been on the antibiotics for a month straight so we have permission to take him off, but to monitor his lungs. We believe this is the best he is going to get and will keep him on the holistic.

I wonder if maybe he should be kept on meds forever? I have a few guys here who are. As soon as I stop they get sick again in about a week's time and it's harder to clear up.

I think we are going to put him back on because he has only been off a couple days and is sounding worse already.

GMC got his first nebulizer treatment yesterday. I tossed him in the travel cage with Popper when I noticed he wasn't breathing as well as I would like. They only got in the boxing stance once, but that didn't work too well for them since the plastic bottom was a bit slippery from the mist and I think they peed! Other than that they got along alright and even fear snuggled a bit! Both a warm wash down afterwards though to get each others pee of of them before heading back to their cages.

EDIT: Just realized from my previous update he's been back on the doxy/baytril since 2/11 - didn't realize it has been that long. Guess its time for a talk with the vet and probably another appointment.

How was he during the treatment? Nebulizing can be hard on the heart, if you saw him struggling even more so, it might be time to consider heart issues. But if not, I think I agree, might need baytril / zithro combo.

He didn't really like it, but his side breathing seemed to easy up. We have been treating his URI since last June (or around there). The blowing mist just freaks them out and it smells awful. He tried to bite the plastic tube - which only meant he got a full inhale of mist. He didn't want a treat afterwards though, but with him its hard to tell if he is refusing treats or just that one - he is a VERY picky eater - its ridiculous, I call him my health nut - if its not a healthy treat he doesn't want it. He was also my only boy (in that cage) that used the wheel (to actually run on). Oh lord I hope I don't have another heart issue baby!!! Crap, that means an x-ray, but he doesn't sound like Popper (chest tumor) or Oliver did (heart tumor) he is just squeaky. I really think he just has lung abscess because unfortunately he was another one I didn't catch the URI on until he had it for awhile. He was squeaky on and off - it wasn't until he appeared in distress that I knew something was wrong. So I don't think I got him treatment before the damage was done. :cry5: I have an email into the doctor. I like these vets, but if it come to steroids they are anti that and pro herbals/holistics - so I really hope I don't have a problem if I ever need them. Most of our boys are on holistic immune boosters and they are doing great and the URIs are down - YAY! Infact, the nakies URIs we knocked out with just doxy and the holistic immune booster ...

I mentioned the zithro, but they said they do not dispense zithro from their office, but would be happy to mix it for us if we brought it in. Where am I suppose to get it from isn't that a prescription medication? Anyway, we started him on theophylline twice a day.

Can they prescribe it and you pick it up at the pharmacy? The azythromicin is paediatric. Get the vet to prescribe it and ask to have the powder divided into three and then at home, you add the water and mix yourself.

I'll have the hubby ask on Tuesday when Tucker has his follow up appt.

If your pharmacy refuses to divide in three and let you mix it at home (all of mine did), request that they divide it themselves and give you only 1/3 of your prescription along with 2 refills for the other 2/3. That's what I had to do for mine.

Can I ask what holistics/immune boosters you are using? I have a couple chronically respy ratties, I'd love to add something in addition to their antibiocs to boost their immune systems.

In the meantime, I hope you find a way to slow down the abscesses and keep your babies around for a long time to come. Pulmonary abscesses are the WORST!

I've heard the echinacea (hopefully that's spelled correctly) is good to put on their water bottles. Is this true?

OL Immune is what most the boys are getting to try and keep them healthy so I don't end up with 15 sick boys. They seem to love it since they fight over the syringes.

We are also going to start mixing Booster into their oxbow. This is suppose to help with the nakies dry skin, but also boost their immune systems (hopefully) http://www.exoticdvm.com/Booster

Popper (chest mass boy) in addition to regular medication, the holistics he gets are HH Hawthorn and KHA Dispel

Kona gets VS - Vetri DMG, this is suppose to help with reducing the lumps he has and/or keep them from growing.
