I was wondering if anyone knew approximately how old rats need to be before being housed safely in a cage with 7/8” wire spacing? (Standard not dwarf.)

I intend on getting a couple rats in the near future and bought a feisty ferret cage without thinking about wire spacing. Ideally I’d adopt adults... I’m just not seeing very many socialized adults from rescues or breeders near me. I’m exploring options and don’t have everything set up yet (still accumulating supplies).

Thanks all.

it really depends. Big females and males should be fine with that but smaller females/rats may not be at all.

Thanks. Yes that’s about what I had thought. I had kept three females in the same style cage years ago without issue, but were all mature adults when I took them in.
